Worker killed after jumping into tiger enclosure: zoo

AFP - Friday, November 14 SINGAPORE, Nov 13, 2008 (AFP) - An apparently disturbed worker was mauled to death by three tigers at the Singapore Zoo on Thursday when he deliberately jumped into their enclosure, the zoo said.

The white tigers pounced on the 32-year-old contract cleaner after he jumped into the moat surrounding their enclosure and then moved toward the animals, the zoo said in a statement.
The zoo, one of Singapore's most prominent tourist attractions, described the victim as "apparently disturbed and agitated".
Fellow workers reported that he "was acting a little bit erratic and odd, throwing papers around" before the incident, assistant director of zoology Biswajit Guha told Singapore's 938Live radio.
Guha said the cleaner worked at the chimpanzee area and was on his lunch break when the tragedy occurred.
"Goodbye, I won't be seeing you again," Guha quoted the victim as telling one of the zookeepers.
"And they saw him riding off on a bicycle and coming back in through the front entrance again, and then about five minutes later, the whole alert came on the walkie talkie," he said.
Horrified visitors screamed as zookeepers rushed into the tiger enclosure to try to rescue the victim.
They threw rocks to try to distract the animals, which dragged their victim toward a passageway, said Guha.
Zoo workers finally succeeded in luring the tigers away from the man and confining them to their pens, but paramedics later pronounced him dead.
The victim had injuries mainly to his head and neck, Lieutenant Colonel N. Subhas, the director of public affairs with the Singapore Civil Defence Force, told AFP.
The zoo identified the dead man as Nordin Bin Montong, a zoo contract worker from Malaysia.
"At no time was any visitor or Singapore Zoo staff exposed to any danger," the zoo said.
Police said they were called to the zoo about 12:30 pm (0430 GMT) and were investigating the "unnatural" death.
The zoo said the moat and other permanent safety features at the enclosure meant there was no risk to visitors or staff.
"Nonetheless, we have temporarily closed the White Tiger exhibit to visitors to facilitate investigations into this unfortunate incident," it said.

New Paper has pictures...page 5 has a gory pix of the poor armless man and his head in the tiger's mouth! I noticed that our local papers are more relaxed in their censorship nowadays...

thanx 4 the heads up - i normally eat lunch while reading the new paper ... mite want to abstain today

new form of suicide?
What if the tiger bite his bird, leg or arm, but not his neck?
he would be in jail right now if his intention is suicide.hahaha.

This is a tragedy, but I have to say, once I again I have underestimated the potential stupidity of a human being again.

Either way, I think the keepers should have guns loaded with tranquilizer darts instead of live rounds. Animals should not be made to pay for the stupidity of humans.

Urgh, and I thought I was desensitized to violence, then again, who am I to tell someone else what not to print.

I agree with you. Why live rounds? And furthermore, it's a white tiger we have there! Rare and endangered!

well this just sounds out that anything can happen in a split second.

this applies to all aspects of life.be it death or opportunity.we must take extra precaution in everything we do even though its something we do almost for everday of our life.

I had a look at the pix in the new paper - the report didn’t mention that the tigers ate his arms ... up to the point of filming (all the pix were taken off someone's handy cam). I think the man probably had his hands upwards in reflex action as he was being carried off by his neck by the tiger.

At least these kind of big game cats actually kill their prey first, normally with a bite to the neck to crush windpipe and/or sever the jugular vein. I have seen actual footage of hyenas actually eating their prey LIVE ... that means the poor animal (an immobile wilder beast in this case) was slowly striped of its flesh while actually perfectly alive.

What ever the poor man's reasons, this shows that carnivores as such will always have the inbuilt "kill" mechanism regardless.

Looking at the new paper pictures, can see how frightened that guy's face was.. Last minute regret probably..

Just teaches you, no matter how bad things are, suicide is never an option.

Strongly agreed. These tigers were just doing what instinct told them to do...

If all 3 were shot/killed that would take another 30,000 tigers before another 3 comes up.
