Why the local scene sucks...

yea. which is why nowadays we improvise on our covers, coz our singer cant hit the high notes, and he used to have this idea he had a listeanble "trany voice" hahaha.. till he saw the videos and foudn out how bad it sounded. but what do u mean by "lovelovelove On Feel The Noize by you guys, pretty hard on the ears?" like its pretty hard to enjkoy the song with the singer shouting his ass off? haha

Oh, and your timing needs improvement. Slow Ride sounds off. That's all, I don't mean to be a smartalec or what, you guys got good taste in music and can play decently, just need improvement.

Just shut up already.

Indeed, this is why the local scene sucks. No courtesy nor respect for social etiquette whatsoever. Until one learns to respect, one cannot be respected.

y local scence SUCK: its gravity lah hehe but actually ppl in music industry love $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ not music

Why does Singaporean artiste talk too much? What's the use of using such bombastic language and stuffs? Why make music so political? I am sure all great artist don't talk too much like many Singaporeans here. They just performed at their best. I have performed in so many places and bigger crowds than most of you can imagine, I just feel Singaporean artiste need to buck up on their playing skills and stage presence. They all seems very unappealing and since their playing skill sucks so bad it shows how little passion they have in music. There's no need to create such thread here. Let's just play music and share music and stop complaining and stuffs like that... those of you here who complains must be a pretty lousy player yourself and a good whiner yourself. It's just so sick to see threads like this as its not appropriate for the world to see.
same sentiment here..
cut the language bull shit.. hehe
either go all out or go get a haircut & get a real job!

play for the MUSIC, not for the money,
what happened to the PASSION!

It is easy to play music as a hobby (aka passion). It is a total different game if you are playing professionally to make a living.

it is a difficult balance, yes
not impossible but, no easy way out to make a living
not only in the music scene, same applies to almost all in the creative fields
either you make bad art/music & get paid for a living or u live to make good music/art &? ...die young hehe

local hair metal acts and rock and roll bands

agreed. its difficult when u take it professionally, but it can be achieved.. if only we have more diverse bands in the local scene. i dunno but whenever i go to watch band play at a pay to play gig. its either metal, or experimental or some weird genre i never heard before.. experimental is so common, its not even experimental anymore. at least to me. but damn it.. how i wished there were rock and roll bands taking it seriously at a working age.. there are bands like tt.. i would have to say bands like we gang and etc are really one of the local bands i love to watch, and so do many other. but its so little. but im glad to see the glam metal scene in singapore to be quite thriving. bands like suicide solution, gutter bonez, bad obsession. really thankful for tt.

Why the "Local Scene" suck :

You don't have to be in the scene or copy bands or get big gigs to be famous. The most ultimate motive I would have is for people to enjoy the songs they make. That's all.

Some local bands work their asses off, suck up to organisers, promote and spam people in facebook, okay whatever ways.. to get the best gigs/events, but their performance turns out to be really bad in such hasty actions. That gives their band a bad reputation by word of mouth and reviews.

Another problem is the amount of gossiping there is within these group of minorities. A is jealous of B getting a famous gig because A thinks that they can own B vice versa.

Okay, bottom line is :

Make good music, thrash the ego and enjoy life.

Cheers,
Maha

allow me to share on the experience I've had with the people in music/anything "art of senses" (photography/videography/music/tattoo/audio/cooking) I've met over the years :

what do people do this for?

For The Fame!
For The Money!
For The Chicks!
For The Passion!
For The Point (purpose)!

take your path.

fame can be networked
money can be earned
chicks can be charmed
passion can be motivated
point can be proven

so isn't it what matters is that everyone enjoys what they're doing be it art/music etc. we may not have similar opinions, but who here HATES what he's doing?

if you're a consumer who feels local music "Sucks" cos the "Standard is not there" then feel free to make yourself comfortable and listen something global that you enjoy. no one's holding you at gunpoint. cos in the end you will be guilty of being skeptic when the final time comes almost 70% of singaporeans listen and support our own local acts and you're the odd one out. cos really, you mean you think the stuff being played on the radio is good now? I personally feel 90% radio sucks now. then again we all have different preferences.

if you're a musician who feels negatively so, write the ultimate proposal to change the entire scene or create your ultimate band to dispel that label. out of the thousands who will laugh at you playing hero, eventually 1 will be inspired and be able to do more and the chain goes on and on.

if you're a producer , and you don't believe in your own capability to produce a band/artiste then consider a change of countries or career? if excuses like "the market not big enough" is enough to stop you, then.. so much for the passion. quit.

well...

allow me to share some opinions.

The local music scene, as a whole, pop/rock/metal etc, is not good at all. Not becos standards are not met. They are bands who can really play, shred, sing very very well, and we also have soloist who actually jammed on the stage with Vai when he was in town (i don't know how much can u all recall about this piece of news...it was an indian guy who jammed with him) and actually surprised Vai with his skills (vai said in an interview tat the guy was good..but dunno true or not...LOL..)

look at all the bands around you, be it Chinese pop/rock, metal, brit rock, ska, J-rock, Malay rock, Indian Rock, fusion, jazz, blues etc. Most of them started out as cover bands, and then moving forward to start doing their own compositions. Looking back as they start from scratch, the songs and pieces covered by them are from foreign acts, be it Linkin Park, Nightwish, X-Japan, Mayday, Shin etc. After which they started to do their originals, you will realize that, "eh...how come sound so...X-Japan...how come sound so Linkin Park..."

so you guys see the big picture here? its not about skills and techniques or recording quality here. its not about how good you and your band are. its this thing call "identity". Look at some of the foreign bands, ok lets take Japanese bands as an example. Look at LUNA SEA, everyone in the band has their own influences. Their lead guitarist, Sugizo, has influences ranging from Frank Zappa, Oasis, Skid Row, korn, Steve Vai. But look at the songs the band composes and performs, there isn't any traces of Frank Zappa, Oasis etc. Another band, Onmyouza, a progressive metal band. They too have their own influences which are foreign acts, but their compositions are so heavily influenced by traditional japanese folk tunes. and bear in mind, they are a METAL band.

Coming back to the local scene. Its not tat bands are not good enuff, technically they are good and organized, but the stuff they composed are not something that belongs to this piece of land. Its not the language or the religion or the views, but something that we can be proud of musically to identify ourselves on this map. Ask yourself this, why is brit-rock call brit-rock? why is J-rock call J-rock? its not because the country they are in denotes this, but rather their identity, and also their culture which also has an important part to play.

identity aside, i have got to agree with what many people has said, band A starts this, band B copies and many ppl start to copy. Modern punk rock has become shit because of the copying trend. first you have offspring, greenday, after that you blink 182, then new found glory and sum 41 who subsquently come out at almost the same time, then soon, the punk trend got sooooooooooooo big that you have ppl like Avril Lavigne who i feel is being poseur, and many other punk bands which i cant even count with my fingers and toes, all doing the same thing, singing the same way, writing about the same shit over and over again. and there comes one thing call EMO punk, which i think its an effort by some punk musicians who wants to be different but turns into, which i feel, is musical nonsense.

the same thing goes for the local chinese pop scene. JJ Lin led the trend of singing like as though your balls are being cut off. Soon ppl starts to follow the trend becos they think it is nice to sing that way, some contestants in the Superstar and Campus Superstar sing like that too, and the judges still say they are good. oh my dear judges, highly respected musicians, are you guys deaf or something? ppl like taufik and hady mirza too, i feel, sing and sound almost the same, not because of their race or culture, but probably becos of the music they listen to, and they must sing like that because, yar, it is being sang originally like that.

in conclusion, i think we lack of both national identiy(musically), and the dare and creativity to create something we call our own. don't just copy copy and poseur, think about what you are playing, jamming, or singing or even composing. be yourself!! i think the best local bands are, regardless of genre, boredphucks, and T'ang Quartet. They have something that i feel is Singapore in them. its not the way they play or perform, but just the "x-factor" in them. perhaps, learn more about their history, songs and pieces might give you guys some valuable answers. =)

cheers!

Lol Green Day & Blink-182 all that aren't punk rock. That's pop punk. And till this day,I still don't get why people are so overprotective of the word "punk rock"...forever argueing that this isn't real punk rock, that isn't real punk rock.Ridiculous.Even if you win such an arguement, what comes out of it?You become a "real" punkster is it?*rolls eyes*

Critical Mass

Guys and Gals, at the end of the day, it is all about critical mass. Singapore? We just don't have that. It is the same in sports, too.

like improve in which areas? we're better now though, but havnt took any videos of our more recent one. this one was in august, we just formed in march

Hmm, you want input? Here's my honest opinion. The band sounds pretty ok, but you should get a new vocalist. He totally murdered The Immigrant Song. Either get a new singer or play songs which he can sing comfortably. He needs to sing in tune too. Tell him not to do those high pitch screams. It's not his style. He sounds like what the hokkiens say "tai kuay" (slaughtering chicken) Other than that, good effort on the music. Keep it up

Aren't you contradicting yourself?

sorry i meant trash metal. when i said metal. i love trash metal bands but i just hate it when its so overdone , and overdone in the same way. metallica, king diamond.. 2 diff sounding trash bands. but the gigs i go to.. wether cover band or bands tt do originals. they either cover the same type of songs, or have originals that aren't diverse enough
