Why most local bands play rock?

Dunno if this question has been posted before, anyway....

I have nothing against rock music, in fact, I love it too but it seems like almost every amateur band here plays rock music only. Very rarely will you find one that plays stuff of another genre, like jazz, fusion, R&B, funk etc etc... I notice that the people who play other genres of music are those in the more senior level (age, exposure, pros etc) and usually do it on a more commercial level. In fact, most active amateur musicians belong to the early 20s or younger age groups, the older ones are usually those who play professionally. What happen to those 30s and above music hobbists? Are they too busy in other aspects of life?

Does this mean that these non-rock music are only reserved for the more 'elite' groups or is it a matter of preference where rock is the ultimate musicians' music?

Please share your kind comments.

cos rock music is like thrusting the hip back and forth like sex and we all have the animal instinct inside that cant be taken away after years of education and fitting in the norm of sociey

I think we play what we hear. I mean just how many 60 year old metalheads do you see everyday?

As we get older we tend to take things slower which reflects a music listening preference for jazz, classical etc.

So since we play what we hear, older people tend to play different genres from youngsters.

Many guitarists actually go one full circle, ie. start learning guitar on a cheap acoustic, moving on to electric guitar, effects, distortion, modulations etc, before seeing the light and selling all those stuff for some high end acoustic just to sit down and strum around. Simplicity at its best. And of course due to the changes in gear the style of playing and genre of music changes too.

That said, I'm 18 and I play jazz so I'm an anomoly. Or really getting old quickly :D It's fun to impress those power chord bangers with some 7th and 13th jazzy inversion chords once in a while heh.

because it's easy? i admit, i suck at blues and jazz guitar.
and i suppose the youth are more exposed or receptive to rock?

I think because it might be easier to 'get into' because it might be more mainstream, and serve as a foundational launch pad if/when the musician wants to explore or venture into other genres. Things that are emphasized in rock - groove, strong backbeat, drive, solid time - can very well be taken far into other genres.

As for "What happen to those 30s and above music hobbists? Are they too busy in other aspects of life?"

I think this would be a period of life when it's very likely for someone to be building his career, or starting a family. Even if he manages to find time to spend on music, chances are he'd rather spend his time jamming than on a forum.

So simply put - I'm sure these 30ish music hobbyists exist (I know I'll be one!), just that they might be much busier than us to hang on a forum on and off.

Rock music is a form of self expression to let the work stress out of the system. These include head banging, diving on the crowd, feel solo and shouting lead vocal (does not include talking to the wall) are all signs that our supressed self need to be let out.....

"Talking to the wall" is an extreme case of self supression where it is bottled up inside and not being let out......(hahaha talk like real only. Talk like champion like that)

many don't have the maturity and ability to play jazz and blues yet.
but still, i would love to see more young jazz and blues rock bands

well in my opinion, many of us, do like some blues and jazz or fusion wateva they may be. Even i myself, and im sure many other as well, sometimes do play music probably with some bluesy or jazzy touch time to time!

Maybe Rock music gifs us the more "head bobbing" and "blood pumping" adrenaline feeling! which gifs us the shiok ... i guess!

As for me, i don really listen to blues or jazz so much, but i do play with some blues (not jazz) feel once in awhile! it adds colour and more feel after so long of head bobbing haha!

Most blues n jazz are kinda slow tempo (beat) and doesnt gifs us the shiok we're looking for!

And from wat i've seen, as rock music, or any other heavy genres involves heavy rhythming, riffs and soloing, it gives us more satisfaction and relief and allows us to vent out if we're having a F@*ked day!

Juz my 2Cents worth!

Cheers!

But really from what I see much more youths are into Asian pop music so actually there are really quite few youths into western music. But many who are into western music seem to stick with the same rock genres. I notice either indie-rock, pop-punk, pop-rock, stuff like that. Very few hard-rockers around.

Personally I'm into rock and metal, but I feel that rock is really expressive in contemporary issues so yeah, its the most meaningful kind of music around. That's one of the reasons why like rock music. The other is of course the strong beat and sheer enjoyable playing style.

why nowadays nobody play classical music anymore? i notice nowadays alot of people are not into classical music these days, despite there being so many great composers like beethoven, mozart, etc. for once i would like to see a symphony playing a public outdoor gig

a symphony is big business..a professional orchestra needs a good deal of dough to perform somewhere.

at least that's what they told me in symphonic band some few years ago.

imo, rock is an easy genre on the instruments. more emphasis is places on the vocals and showmanship of the band.

when we get into something more sophisticated which requires more theory, it gets hard trying to churn out pieces which make an impact through pure musical technicalities.. that might come with experience i guess...

for now, i'm too noob to play anything more sophisticated than blues and rock and metal =D
