I'm putting together a diy strat with parts i got off from the net..want to ask my fellow softies for your opinions on what kind of pickups to put in..

I don't have a particular type of tone in mind, i just gunning for a really good classic strat sound. I'm looking at maybe the duncan SSL-1 set, antiquities or fender custom 69s. Do you guys have any opinions or experience with these pups?

ill post pics when the strat is done up.. : D

Custom 69s... Nuff Said... No other pickup set is needed...

But hor, you talking about WHICH kind of classic strat sound? 50s? 60s? 70s?

yeah im leaning towards this set. i don't have a particular sound in mind though. just a pickup that would make a strat sound like a strat should. bell-like highs, thumpy lows. something like that.

Again, when you say a strat sound, which variation? Because the 69s, while are the sweetest tones I've ever heard from the single coil blueprint, aren't exactly meaty and fat. For a tone like Buddy Guy's or Clapton's 90's tone, it's more a Fat 50s sort of tone. But don't expect humbucker lows from a single coil...

Have you considered the Custom Shop vintage noiseless pups? Those are nice. Not 69 nice, but nice enough.

I've got a les paul so i've got the meaty and fat tone covered, this time im just trying to achieve something tonally different.. I would consider the vintage noiseless pups, but i've not really seen or heard reviews about it. I did read a good review on 69 pups here on soft so between the two i would prefer the 69.

if theres a way to emulate SRV's tone, that would be good. I've tried the texas special pups but i don't think it sounds like SRV.

original fender vintage noiseless set ... the best of the best for noisless strat tones!!!!!!

To me, the 69s are the ultimate. You want SRV's tones? it's there. You want Clapton's 70's tones FROM THE ORIGINAL BLACKIE, it's there. You want Robert Cray's tones? it's there. You want John Mayer's Try! tones? It's there too... There's nothing I'd think that's lacking from these. but if you want that 50's Shadows tones, then you'd have to use something else. This set is too clean and lean for that.

But I know fgl stands for the vintage noiseless on this one...

But anyways, here's something for you to check out: Acme Guitar Works - Guitar Parts, Pickups, Electronics, and Prewired Assemblies
Side by side comparisons of the different pup sets you're considering...

Me? I just lurve my 69's... 69's in a maple neck strat with a superlight body... that's tha secks!!!!
