Hi there,

Anyone knows where I can rent a room for purpose for audio recording ?

It need not be a professional & soundproof room. Jus a room big enough without much glass.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated

Thanks

What is your budget and how many hours do you need? Any musical instrument required?

Why not rent a jamming studio? It's a studio anyway plus instruments/amps and basic equipment. Haha. If it's just a simple and basic recording, you could even do it at home!

Yeah, just go to any jamming studio during offpeak hours so you don't have to worry about noise. Instead of paying more for block booking of a "proper" recording room.

Hi there,

Thanks to all for their response.

My budget is very low bcos I do not need a professional recording studio. At most about 4 hrs is enough

All I need is a reasonable big room with some electrical points BUT WITHOUT glass & windows.

I do not need any musical instrument bcos I will use my own.

Namreh is correct, it is a simple recording that I can do at my own house. My house is small and my house is so open and has so many glass & windows. The rooms in my house are too small.

In fact, any community hall or function rooms in condo has such rooms ?

Thanks.

Why not a jamming studio? No glass and windows. Im not sure about the halls and rooms but if you need to pay to rent those venues, Im pretty sure it's not going to be cheap. You might as well spend the money on booking a studio to do your recording. It depends on what quality you are looking at but if you want to do a live recording, if im not wrong, you could try Beat Merchants. They offer a pretty low price for their live recording but I'm not very sure about their quality. They offer multi-tracking too.

Thanks Namrehs, I think this beatmerchantstudio is good. Not sure if the room is big enuf. But the walls look uniform in color so probably can use it to do a greenscreen effect ?

Btw, what does a jamming studio means ? Is beatmerchantstudio the only jamming studio in Singapore ?

Thanks

A jamming studio is a room with instruments and amps for bands to rehearse... and Beat Merchants is not the only one; in fact it's not a very good one...

But if you need an empty room then jamming studios are out of the question. So What exactly are you recording??

Thankfully, James compiled a list of jamming studios in SG here -> http://www.soft.com.sg/forum/showthread.php/4101-Singapore-Jam-Studios-List-(read-first-post)

Basically, jamming studios are studios where bands can play and practice together. Usually cost about 15-20SGD per hour depending on which studios and how big they are. Some big rooms that can be used to host small gigs are also available but might cost you about 25-30SGD per hour. These are just studios that you can play in but no recording services are available.
The studio that is used to do recordings in Beat Merchants is pretty big. Rectangular in shape. Practised there a couple of times with my band(5-piece) and there was enough extra space to move around. Not sure if there are other similar studios like the Beat Merchants studio that provide "live" recording services though. Do take note that the "live" recording is charged on top of the jamming time. There are also other studios that are strictly recording studios so you book to do your recordings with a sound engineer. I assume that will not be what you are looking at because it is pretty expensive and what you will get is a CD-quality kind of recording.
The difference with the cheaper Beat Merchants "live" recording and the expensive recording studios is that, for the "live" recording, every member of the band plays together at the same time and the audio is recorded and not edited, I believe. The quality is not CD-quality and can only be used for demo purposes. It is youtube worthy though. For recording studios, the band would do multi-tracking instead of playing together as a band. There will be editing, mixing, mastering etc etc and what you will get is a CD-quality recording that can be released to the public.

Why don't you fill us in with more information about what you want to do so we can have a better idea and can give you better advice and suggestions?

Thanks Namrehs,

Basically, I want to do a video recording of a group (about 6 person) singing. I have 3 videos filming simultaneously from 3 different angle. Each singer will have his own mic. Each of the 6 mics is connected to my own audio interface which is in turn is connected by firewire to my laptop via garageband. They will sing with a karaoke instrumental which they can listen thru a headphone.

I will then sync the video with audio recorded.

So you see, I am only an ameteur in terms of audio. I don't need their equipment bcos I have my own. I need a big room because I need to video the group. The room need to be wide enough because I need to spread the 6 mic stand apart plus I need some distance away to put place the video camera on the left & right end. Another video camera will be from the front. Even though it has a wide angle lense, I still need some distance to be able to capture all the 6 singers.

I was also hoping if the wall of the room is an even color, there will be possibility of me using Final Cut Software or Adobe Premiere Pro to do a greenscreen affect where I can replace the background with some other scenaries.

Hope you understand my requirements. Do you think the room in Beat Merchant is big enough ?

Thanks a million for your advice.

Cheers

No, the room in Beat Merchants or 99% of other jamming studios will not be big enough, and they will not be willing to remove all the drums/amplifiers/speakers and other equipment that's wired up to give you a nice empty space to setup your own video rig.

What you want to look for is a photography studio for rent. Some photo studios have packages (half-day / full-day, photo or video) that include use of equipment. I know you have your own cameras, but they will have good lighting equipment, big uncluttered rooms with even coloured walls, some will have optional backdrops for greenscreen.

Thanks carboxymoron for your response.

Can recommend a photography studio ? Are they expensive ? [if the rates are like beat merchant jamming studio, it is okay for me]

Thanks

You might want to ask around on ClubSNAP http://www.clubsnap.com/ for better photo studio advice. I think the rates are higher, but they will have package deals. You can try asking for cheaper package if you don't need the equipment.

Thanks carboxy,

I tried asking in ClubSnap but they suggested that I tried jamming studios. So I am back to square one.

I have visited a few jamming studio. The are always small (not enough width) and too dark. So I need to turn on the light. But when I turn on the light, usually there will be shadows on the wall. This makes the greenscreen affect difficult to work as keying is difficult with shadows.

Have you come across any jamming studio that is big (especially width) and bright ?

Alternatively, do you know of any other options ?

Thanks & Cheers

I think carboxymoron probably suggested the best idea. If lighting and having a plain background is important, a photography studio is best. It's difficult to find studios which are big enough for your purpose especially when you want to film something down. Even so, jamming studios tend to be darker and you'll need extra lighting equipments to brighten up the room. If you don't want shadows, a photography studio is still the most suitable choice. If you're interested, Lcube studios has a room that should be big enough for you. It is a room made for gigs and there is an area that has no equipments, just a soundproofed wall. Again, I dont think the lighting is good enough for you and if im not wrong, the panels on the wall are black.

If you have all your necessary gear(mics, mic stands etcetc), why not find a suitable space outside? It might be tough trying to find a space with a white wall and power supply point but im sure there is. NYP sure has plain walls and power supplies everywhere but im not sure if you will be able to film there. Level 1 probably has the least human traffic and it should be quiet enough. The audio quality might be sacrificed a little due to the environment but having decent quality should be good enough right?

Thanks, I went to L Cube Studio today. I think their biggest room is adequate for my purpose. But they do not have a room without equipment. Also, the soundproof panels on the wall are black while the walls are white. So there is no uniformity on the color of the background. The guy mending the shop advise me to look for a photography studio instead.

Any photography studio you can recommend ?

Thanks

Yes it would be ideal if I can find one. But until now I have no such luck ... any tips ?

I am not a student in Nanyang Poly so I think this option is out

When you say Level 1, u referring to open space areas or rooms ? I think open space area is really not suitable for my purpose ....

Thanks

I do see people in the school compound not studying in NYP so I believe it might be okay for you to film there. The area I suggested is an open area.

Well, given your situation, you really have to give and take cause there isnt an entirely perfect room or area for your use. If the Lcube studio is suitable, what you can do is to get a cloth and use it as a backdrop. If the lighting isnt good enough, you'll have to find lights to use. Otherwise, your second choice would be a photography studio. Like what carboxymoron suggested, go on to http://www.clubsnap.com and look for someone who can rent you a studio. The photography studio will fulfill all your filming requirements but I'm not too sure about the acoustics.

All the best!
