What's in your VSTplugin folder?

hi cheez, SD is totally different from SD 2, its best to get both. SD 2 doesnt cover any sounds from SD . hee.. im best sticking with stand alone soft sampler libraries (im kinda attractive to them :P). yea, and i bought the plat. ewql so and xp for 50% off, i think its a great deal! haha.. yep.. now i've just entered poly only, so i dont need to worry about anything else besids school work ! i may get komplete 4 though, when the time is right.

Wah tera, going poly and spending that much on samples! No objections from parents? So you jumped in on soundsonline 50% sales eh? It's a pity you are going standalone. If you have Kontakt or GVI, the standalone plug into them as well. And they let you load other non-standlones. They all fit into a nice combined interface.

This thread is becoming more and more of a sampling thread rather than VST. Maybe we should extend the topic to include samples as well.

And since Tera has started already with his new samples, I'll continue with mine:

Orchestral: Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra, Kirk Hunter's Symphonic Orchestra (Emerald), Symphony of Voices, Xsample's Harp/celesta/klavicymbels

Pianos/keys: Sampletekk's White Grand Jr, PMI's Emperor, Gigapiano, SonicImplant's B3, DX-Rex (Yamaha DX11 samples), Prophet-5, Sampletekk's Harsichord and clavs

Ethnic/Word: Ethno World Complete, EW Rare Instruments, Xsample's Psalter

Percussion/drums: SonicImplant's AfroCuban, Percussive Adventures, DrumImplants, Wizoo's chimes and Yamaha Toms, Acousic Essentials

Guitars/Bass: Acoustic Essentials (6 and 12 strings, Washburn bass), Guitar Implants, Yellow Tool's Pure E-basses

Loops: Metamorphosis

License-free: Wizoo's oberheim samples and hybrid stings/brass (I think they are ARP samples) and analog basses, SAM free trumpets/tympanis/snares/rototoms/stomps, various FX and loops, others.

Plan carefully, look for sales and clearances, get only samples you need - and you can save a lot of money. Cheaper than hardware.

oh yes, out of thread doesn't mean out of time and out of value!

it's related to VST anyway, all these sampling plug-ins!

nowadays need to invest in a super computer to run software samples and VST !!!

Not all samplers are VST plug-ins. Gigastudio for example is not a plug-in - perhaps the only one that isn't! Because it is not, it can harness more power and is faster by bypassing Windows kernel level. By not being a plug-in also means slightly more hassle as you deal with 2 environments at the same time - the sampler and the DAW software. But once everything is loaded in, you just need to work with the DAW in sequencing.

And you don't need super-powerful PCs actually. If you look at the specs, the minimal requirements for most is 1.4GHz P4. Just need lots of RAM and a separate HD. Most notebooks and PCs today can run them effortlessly. Don't need powerful graphic cards and RAM doesn't have to be super-fast. HD, however, needs to be fast.

errrr? oh? I think I give a wrong info again... hehe paiseh...

nowadays to record music must be
musically inclinde and IT technical savy.

very demanding...

haha cheez, nope , no objections. yep, cause i consider this a "business" liao heh.. will be doing this all the time besides school (and my course is related as well, sp music n audio tech) . Haha.. (from what i know/see ) my school don't even teach us how to use soft samplers.. all use internal plug-ins from Cubase, thats wad i see. My sch is starting next week liao :D:D..
i might get komplete 4 though, when the price drops (hopefully).. then i can join u in clearance sales in the quest for kontakt samples ! :P.

yep.. nowadays if u wanna survive, everything gotta bao ka liao ar.. from music, to music tech, to audio, to marketting? hahah... nowadays eveyone's a 5 in 1 person.

Tera: U mean "5.1" person!!

As for conversion of one format to another, I believe, if you look hard enuf, there's always a way to come right up to the format you need (although no guarantee if the quality remains the same after converting to and fro!!)

Cheez: U listed the "cheenakong": Erhu. How is it? Is there a glide in there that allows more "authentic" phrasing of a "real" Erhu?

Anyway, the reason I brought up this VST thread was because, the other day, when I upgraded to Sonar Home Studio 6 and had a look at the VST folder (which was stuffed with VST since Home Studio 2004 days!!), I was shocked to see the number of plugins I had in there that I had WANTED to test. But, as you'd all know, there's almost NO TIME to test all the plugins when new ones come in every month or so! :P
This came about after I bought the CM Special on Plugins, this month.
In fact, there were even MORE plugins that I've forgotten about when I looked into the Effects insert!! *phew*
The times when we waited for a new synth (or effects) model at the end of every year....... :o

qfactor, chineekong is the best for chinese instruments. There's no competition. RA doesn't even come close to it. I've emailed them and they basically laughed in the face of RA. They told me themselves that RA is nothing when it comes to chinese instruments. Chineekong instruments are sampled by people who actually played the instruments well (in China), so they know what articulations need to be sampled, how it should be played, and created it to simulate the real chinese instruments as much as possible. I don't think they have real legato samples...yet. But it's only a matter of time. Listen to their demos. Their Erhu is simply beautiful.

What I downloaded is the free versions, which is very limited but some patches may come in useful at times. If you want to write chinese pieces, look no further. Chineekong/Chineewinds is the ONLY way to go.

cheez, although i agree that chineekong sounds fantastic, RA does come quite close in terms of its erhu and dizi (since ra only has those two ). The bends etc. soudns very real in RA. i may consider buying the whole set of chineekong though ^_^.. will be needing them soon for an upcoming project. and chineekong offers the "full range" of chinese insturments. RA only has 2 , erhu and dizi.

Hi tera, erhu is more than just bends and slides. There are many other playing techniques involved. That's where Chineekong claims they are way supperior to RA. It also depends on what you are going to write. If it is simple chinese music with erhu and dizi as background, you probably can get away with it. However, if the piece focusses a lot on the erhu or dizi, I'm afraid RA still lacks the articulations.

I have Ethno World and RI - and they come pretty close too. But there are still articulations missing.

If you are getting Chineekong, do note that their method of copy-protection is challenge-response. Some people may find this extremely irritating. Personally, I would still prefer a dongle to CR, although I don't like dongles. But at least once plugged-in, you forget they are there. CR will keep popping up in your screen once in a while.

since we are talking about VST plugins,
I just bought a copy of Computer Music Special
magazine 200 hot plugins !!!

check it out !

Yea, that's the reason why I ended up looking into my VST folder in my PC! After I bought the mag and gone thru it, I was, well, "inspired"!

Yup! Been there b4.
My VST folders "stuffed" with most of the MDA plugins already. :o
Though I think now I've gotta be USING them!

QF

Haha I use MDA plug ins too. Its good.

Using Sonar, they have a good selection of VST built in so no worries.
