What's happening with Boss pedal quality? :( :(

First it was my SD-2 that would kill 70-80% volume and produce a horrible noise like forty raving mad pit-vipers in a very small uncomfortable cage, and completely died after doing that for 3 months. Next, it was my DD-5. It would refuse to switch off for the first 20-30 seconds after powerup, the past few months. Then it started going real weird yesterday, the volume would go up and down at regular 2-3 second intervals even when the pedal was NOT engaged! Granted, I've had these pedals for 7-8 years, but they've never been damaged or abused or thrown around - used almost always at home.

Both are Taiwan made, if that makes any difference.

Still got my old (1989 or so) CS-3 that looks like an abused hand-grenade but still works fine. It's only these two newer pedals.

Do you folks find your boss pedals doing fine? If you've had problems, what happened?

And while we're at it, what would you recommend as a good delay? I don't care for any fancy effects, a simple analog delay or equivalent digital unit would suffice. Not too concerned about subtle differences in tone or "warmth" either. Just something robust.

Thanks all!

the boss delays are like that. you need to wait awhile before you can power it off.

but not for 20-30secs of course. Its the way you handle it maybe? or the previous owner.

My boss pedals, some of which are older than me are all working fine. (some are twice my age)

Good delay? Ive got an analogman analog delay for sale, They're rare. hahaha. PM me if int. :D

my boss cs-3 also have some output problems. repaired it like 5 mths ago. currently when its triggered (even with mild od) the whole thing hisses like crazy. Think the guy soldered something wrongly. :(

the volume drop is normal and is due to the design of the pedal. not only boss pedals but some other pedals have that effect too. but honestly i've not heard of boss pedals breaking down before. sorry to hear about the DD5 man..

im currently experiencing the volume drop problem with my multi-effects unit.troubleshooted but still the problem surfaces.

Boss are quite renowned for their rigid and tough products.but the circuitary seems to fry faster than then the case.

my ds-1 has a very serious volume drop if compare my mt-2 with my ds-1.
when i max the volume of ds-1 , the volume is like only 9 o clock on my mt-2. :(

and i was thinking of buying some boss pedals. lol. guess i shal be back to digiitech then. or maybe boss since it looks uber cooll

The only problem i forsee is SMT boards and servicability.
Support from Boss is unheard off ...just made it worst.
Maybe GR3y can now post the pic i sent him ;)

Thanks for the inputs folks. JMS, this delay was bought brand new from Swee Lee in 1998-99 or so. Very light handling - practise sessions at home, nothing more. There's no prob with the patch cables - swapped them around and checked. Today it's getting even more weird. There is no sound for about 30-40 sec after power on, whether bypassed or engaged. Then it slowly starts working. The 3 sec volume swell up/down is still present. Looks like it's fried :p

If only I can find something as rugged as my Barber / skreddy pedals ... The search is on :)
