whats a good stand alone smooth overdrive pedal

I don't know if its appropriate to say one efx sounds like another just because there are similar components used. Changing a cap value can reduce the amount of low end for example and that can translate into a crappy pedal to someone, and a useful tool for another person. Changing the chip can change the overdrive characteristics in various ways - small or big, up to the player. Even the true bypass argument cannot hold water for some people.

yup.. im curious to know if anyone has tried the cool cat, or maybe compared it side by side with a timmy. i think most pple are excited about the prospect of getting a timmy for much less money than the original.

I wonder... because another product is so much cheaper than the original... will people start making them out to sound more similar than they actually are?

Ever bought the cheaper 'clone' only to discover, to your horror, it sounds NOTHING alike the original?

i'd go for either SD-1 or TS-9.

but well, TS-9 isn't really smooth per say. it's got its own grit in it.

and it's a tube screamer, it goes best with tubes

LOL. Jack Black. :-D

But his TO vs. Timmy comparison is indeed awesome. What I did was not to look at the video and just hear which is best and I cannot even tell which is which... ;)

Actually, can tell. The Timmy was a bit more bell like and hollow, giving a nice "aw" tone. The TO was a bit flatter, and more "eh".

Very objective there. But the only difference between the TO and the timmy is an opamp and a few caps...which to solder bunkers at FSB its more or less 90-95% of the timmy circuit.

A Timmy still costs 99USD right?

The price of a Timmy went up recently due to component and build costs as cited by Paul...its now 129 USD....still very affordable for a booteek efx although most ppl take advantage of the long wait time to make a killing.

Ironically, that would be less apparent now since the recent Danelectro "cloning controversy" would be a more viable alternative.....put your name down on the list and while waiting 8 months for your timmy to arrive you can simply make do with a TO!

This form of negative publicity is ironically good....Oh and i just went to Penin today....all transparent ODS are out of stock! Wanted to buy 2 for myself and a friend to muck around.

Thing is, in a guitar, just changing a tone cap alone or adding a cap to the vol for a treble bleed alone can matter quite a bit in difference. What more a FEW caps and one entire IC? Those IC Chips are made up of various logic gates as a configuration. We don't know (or at lease I don't know) what each specific IC is meant to achieve in terms of gain. We only know gain stages, but that alone is not enough to make sense of things. This is why I asked Goose previously if bouqitue guys designed their own ICs and EEprommed them, or bought them off the shelf. There's a good change the boutique makers themselves might not even know what they're using, just that it sounds good. Maybe there's a NOR Gate there? or a NAND gate in there that makes a difference?

I dunno...
