Hi Softie,

As we all know, Xmas is around the corner and i wish to buy some stuff for my cousin who recently just started off in computer music. My budget is S$1000 (but maximum is S$2000).

Here are some stuff that he have, he got a computer(very up to date) and a pair of not-so-good monitor (gaming monitor).

What kind of Audio Interface, midi controller, software, etc etc will you people buy? if you guy were in his shoe, what will you people want?

Thanks=)

What software has he already got? What kind of music does he do? Can he play the keyboard? How serious is he into making music with his PC? All these questions will determine what you should get for him. You don't want to get something that ends up as a white elephant.

Perhaps the best way is to ask him what he wants!

And you are a very generous cousin!!!!

Hi Cheez,

Thanks for the rely.
here are some of your question answer.

What software has he already got?
Ans: Some freeware that i have d/l and pass it to him.

What kind of music does he do?
Ans: trying to influence him to do dance music. sometime he will invite some friends over to record in his hse. (i have show him a trick or two on recording)

Can he play the keyboard?
Ans: a little. he is learning guitar from his friends.

How serious is he into making music with his PC?
Ans: he is just a beginner. but i am trying to influence him more.

generous??
Ans: Not really...just dont want another kid to go down the drain.

=)

yes if your budget is $1000.

get a Line6 KB37 or something. then a couple of xlr cables and a couple of mics , maybe one SM58 and one cheap behringer condenser.

or one SM58 one xlr cable, and one huge ass hard disk. (PC composition/recording means requiring more hdd space)

so he can compose (not much with that mini keyboard) / record and save money on guitar effects if he decides to do recording. and there's mics to record vocals too.

now.. i got one more important thing to tell you. i am your long lost cousin too...

there's this high end preamp i've been wanting for ages that costs about.. $3K? ...

Hi blueprintstudios,

that's a good one. but sorry i dont think i got any long lost cousin.

anymore good suggestion from the masses??

My impression is that he is going the "dance music, sequencer, softsynth" track rather than the "recording instruments" track. Or did I get the wrong impression?

For dance and electronic music, 25key controller is more than sufficient (since he would be probably doing loop based sequencing), particularly for a beginner.

well my impression is that the cousin is picking up guitar. so i'm assuming when there's guitar there should be abit of singing also. even dance music has vocals singing in it. so line6 KB37 should be the all rounder for the synth side for loops/dance music midi thingies and the recording side with the mic preamps/guitar effects. and then the budget meeting side it's about $500 if i'm not wrong. could be cheaper.

cheap, good and alot. thats what all singaporeans want. haha.

besides, i know it sounds weird. i do alot of band recording. but band music aside, I listen to alot of trance music as inspiration/relaxation. I would have done trance compositions if i could play the piano/keyboard. so whether your cousin is going to turn out as a trancehead or a metalhead. i personally feel KB37 would be the balance point.

First start off with fruity loops studio. It contains the most bang for the buck, plus free lifetime upgrades. A microkorg for controller and sounds. It's mini keys though. And a copy of computer music. It should come with a bunch of free plugins. There's basically a lot of choices for audio interfaces. The one hot off the press will be the tc electronics konnekt series. But! you can try one of the second hand firewire 410s that are doing their rounds right now. This in total should set you slightly above 1k depending on what version of FLstudio you get. Or you could get ableton live, which has a more intuitive beat slicing/sampling paradigm.

If you don't need immediate feedback on playing, i'd suggest just sticking to his original computer setup, see if it can run asio4all, and use something like skale tracker to do his shebang. Record audio using audacity, trim and insert into the tracker.

wow thanks a lot guy!!!! thank for the great feedback!!!

I think i will get what you people suggest. a little here and a little there...

whether he become a trancehead or metalhead, I always think its best to learn both technic of music genre.

=)

hahah blueprintstudios,

okok...i promise that if i become rich i will try to sponsor gear and stuff to all the young musician in SG...but that is if i become rich someday...someday...

=P

Your thread have reminded me to start saving for Christmas too! Wah so fast shopping for Christmas liao.

My suggestion is to surprise him with the soon to be launched Reason 4, slated 26th of September 2007. Get him a good pair of headphones (to avoid problems with your aunt/uncle) and a decent FireWire based audio interface.

I truly believe that music can change lives! Go for it!

There are a few softwares you can get from Challenger whcich cost less than 100 bucks. You might wanna check those out. I have one myself - Magix Music Studio:

http://www.magix.com/us/music-studio/ ( I have the deluxe 10 version though)

You can also get a copy of Computer Music. The DVD that comes with it has a good computer-based DAW package, complete with VSTs and samples. The magazine itself is a grail of great reads about gears and techniques.

These two wouldn't even cost you $100!

I second Blueprint's suggestion with the KB37, though. It is a more all-rounded solution and probably the best first real gear your cousin. I have the UX2 which is a downgrade of KB37 (without the pinao keys) and absolutely love it.

Hi guy thanks for all the reply!!! :D

ok here is what i will get for him:

- Reason 4
- KB37
- Bluesky monitor

i think it will be around less then $2000...

thanks again guy...

maybe something like an M-audio Ozone http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MAudioOzone-main.html
And ProTools M-powered
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=100&navid=35&itemid=4901&ref=ptmp-hp

Then also get Reason 4 (which works as a plugin for ProTools)
http://www.propellerheads.se/index.cfm

Then he'll have the best Audio program, the best program for Trance and all that stuff, and a nice little keyboard/audio-interface

And a pair of K141's (studio-monitor headphones)
All should be less than 2K
