What pedals do pros use

I've watched some vids on youtube and am always wondering what type of effects do they use?

Take Petrucci's board for example, its so freaking HUGE! With so many effects, it looks like a giant remote control! Which leads me to the question, what the hell is that?

Is it a multi? Or is it something else?

I hope someone can help me out with this and enlighten me

Pertrucci's board is literally a giant remote control, controlling the various combinations of effects and settings of his rack processors and amps through midi.
