what exactly is TGM??

Depending on the model, some are really not that bad. Infact, I bought a semi acoustic guitar that looked like an ovation. Unplug, sound not great but if plugged in as good as my semi acoustic ovation.

The newer ones has an in build tuner. I must say the quality has improved alot since I know about TGM guitars. Maestro guitars are good but a bit pricey. But it all depends on how you feel about the guitar. It doesn't matter if the brand is really Tan Guat Meng or The guitar Man. As long you feel good about it buy it. Go for what you think will do you the purpose.

I have to agree there too, it depends on the individual. I remembered using a friend's TGM Semi Acoustic that sounded so much better than his expensive Yamaha semi acoustic(I Know you think I'm kidding), but the feel and tone were just perfect for me and it was quite stunning to actually feel and hear the difference. It could be that his Yamaha happened to be a Dud, and that his TGM happened to be a gem, but you see, the point I'm making is that sometimes its not about the brand, its about how lucky you are during your purchase. If it feels good for you, it feels good, buy it , end of story.Cheers!

Infact here's another TGM guitar that I bought from a fellow softie.

Change up the look and changed the bridge pickup with a Tesla....wah...now powerful.

Maybe his friend happened to get a dud. My old, beat-up Yamaha F310 sounds better than a lot of guitars costing more, and the most impressive acoustic guitars I've ever played are mostly Yamahas.

I really ought to go and try some TGM electrics. I still think their acoustics are jialat but their electrics do look pretty good. But I'm not sure if I can trust them to hold up on stage.

Yes Ryan, I did all by myself but I didn't paint it. I laid a fabric over it and that's how the end result goes. Changed the pickup, adjusted truss rod, and lower down the action. About the feel, it's just the same as my Ibanez Jem. Sound wise, infact better than my Jem. That one probably the pickup.

Eugene: Well, I've used my TGM semi acoustic for many Acoutic gig and works out well. I'm talking about 3 sets per nite thingy. Well, maybe you ought to try it out too the newer ones. But again, everything is about preference.

they dont even need one, when people here in singapore even knows them. i wonder if singaporemade guitars like maestro are well known in china. hmm

But I'm sure potential buyers would want to check the specifications? Like the woods used. But unfortunately people would be turned off by 'plywood', 'NATO' and 'agathis' even before they try it out, which is being self-limiting in my opinion.

If a cheapo plywood made body electric guitar can give me the right sound in my playing, comparing to some brands that equally gives me the right sound at a higher price I'll settle for the plywood made body. For me I change my guitar collection from time to time. From my previous high end guitar, I'm settling with some of those cheapo stuffs that people just can't bear to look at. What's left of my high end guitar is the Ovation as it has some sentimental value. If not, I'll sell it away too. Hehehehe!!

I once saw, a band that has a guitarist using an Ibanez Jem series. We were expecting the guitarist to shred as he has long hair with rockish look. But when the band plays. His solo was like....hmm...I think he better use a kapok guitar. Likewise, a young band that I saw the guitarist using a Craftsman guitar which also a cheapo don't know if it's plywood or what but the guitarist really rock the house man!! If you can play, any guitar will do. It's just the preference of brand or kind of sound you like. A guitar that can't be intonate with too many dead notes is a very bad guitar irregardless or brands.

well i own a tgm bass..

Plus point
its really eye catchy and light weight..
futhermore 5 string for $200..
Easy to carry around
just a simple bass..for jamming or for gigs ..up to the choice of the musician.

Minus point
Hardly can hear the tapping sounds if u tap on it..

My conclusion on tgm.
They are quite reliable for lotsa situation.:)

Hey Eza,

You may wanna change some of the electronics parts for that case. Maybe a better pickup. But if don't do tapping that frequent....you may just be happy with what you got that serve the purpose.

Agree with you, Tetra! Last time I saw plywood as a no-go but heck.. A good guitar's a good guitar no matter what. My Yamaha acoustic is awesome despite its meranti back and sides. I'm actually considering getting an SG copy as my second guitar, might try out some TGMs and see because there are people who have good experiences with TGM. While their acoustics look shoddy (the ones I've seen, that is) their electrics actually look pretty good. It looks like it's another visit to Ranking for me. I just love Ranking. The gear, the salespeople, every time I've gone there, I've had a great experience.
