What do you guys think of Sg scene?

Picking up in terms of pace man..
Local music can hold its own ground against foreign music.. Lol..
Everything's more happening with tonnes of great musicians around!

Getting Better

Ya I think it's getting better and better...I'm quite glad for it really. I think there have always been some pretty good acts around, like Concave Scream and Humpback Oak (ooh...humpback oak) but the market wasn't really matured enough perhaps. (Or we can even go further back, to Matthew Tan of Matthew and the Mandarins.)

There've also been tonnes of really good sessionists and songwriters, like Dick Lee (among many others)...we're in a good place to be! Hopefully someday we shall see local bands making big waves in Asia -- we'll see, I'm proud anyway.

Rock on Singapore.

yeah, the local scene now is good. started listening to local bands for the past 2 years and ive been hook on to it ever since.

theres a big gig coming this sat, fastern your seatbelts. The bands there are damn good imo. a little taste of good local music

yeah agreed.
its much better and more prominent now and picking up really fast. also thanks to the media as well as the efforts of the musicians for making local music known. the general public is paying more attention. but i feel there's still alot of growing to do lah... it would not flourish so quickly.

that's why

you're selling your ARTWORKS AND image
when you're buying CD's and stuff

what catches you attetion??
yes....if you know what i mean

to me>Singapore music Scene<business>
we're talk about business not personal.i think is very different and it can't be compare to outside SINGAPORE
you don't see bands getting sign into a label everything
you don't see tour around singapore>>
and you hardly see people buying albums <local bands album>

my suggestion?
well,i have no right to do this cause im not a businessman
but IF ONLY PEOPLE FROM EVENT MANAGEMENT
can work with other company and stuff

why not?by then we'll have a tour
it's a great idea <<<also since we have networking like
myspace/SOFT/youtube and more

we can have some media people to interview and promo this kind of stuff

HAAHAHAH..just some crazy ideas <<if i offended you> then im very sorry!

well,im clearing my stuff so using this chance to tell you guys<don't blame me/since i can't bump everything> here's the link

lol yeah man. the market sucks in sg. i dunno why sg ppl do not support local stuff but yet other countries like japan, korea, the us, they are proud of their local scene. sg ppl are like, ahh, why buy cds and stuff when i can just download it for free, or i dun really need music and stuff like dat. imo, sg ppl are too self-engross in their own lifes, becoz sg ppl work like mad as living in sg is hard, so they dun really care bout much. sorry if im stereo-typing. ahaha.

Threadstarter. What do YOU think of the SG scene? (25 marks)

hmm 25 marks
thank you for u have just reminded me the good old days in school...

so wat i think of the sg scene?
well lots of promising bands are surfacing and a few of our local bands are doing their ep and releasing them.

well there is people who buy local music albums and songs...
but we need to raise the numbers
why do foreign music, known by all?
because their local supporter who buy their music and spread their music till, we all buy foreign music instead of buying our local music which i must say the local music have produce the same quality of music or should i say better than some of the foreign music,
we just dont realise it yet.

i bet some of you buy foreign music album that cost 40 over dollars
and u can get a local band album at 10 dollar or less
and they produce the same quality of music.

our local band do tours around asia.
like
my precious(tour indonesia)
summers over(tour australia)
(just to name a few coz the list might just get longer)
and we have alot of local bands who travel up and down over the coastway to perform at our neighbouring country malaysia...

these bands are with potential and they are our local bands
we are the one who should be doing something for our local scene
if they were to be renowned, people will start noticing our country.
and therefore opportunities will arises for our local scene.

and it all start with us.
like how the other countries scene work because of their people who support their local scene.

so remember support your local scene!!!

thank you

do remember we do have local talents!!

thank you maman.

one of those things in this forum is people coming in to ask for opinions without giving theirs. always asking and never giving. Most dissapearing after asking a question without a thanks.

My view? It is better than ever.

our local scene..

hmm..edder is correct. its better than ever.
GSE is one of the acts getting recognition abroad.
remember, we do have our own rocking acts back in 70's
just to name a few, Tania, gingerbread

Opposition Party, another great band.
I can safely say our musicians here are very much on par with those abroad.
17 years ago, we even do not have locally produced pedals

fast foward today-we have that thing called *sahasrara*-drool...i'm getting one soon
must get approval from my minister of finance-very long process, must submit quotation,etc.etc...

Too one dimensional. There's no chance for bands that actually tries to make their own sound. It's either Indie-leaning, Thrash/Gore/Brutal Metal-leaning or overhyped 80s glam rock bands. Not that this is bad, but this will also be the downfall of the scene if it reaches higher levels. The growing pace of the local scene is very encouraging but I can't help but notice that there is no way other type of bands can break through the scene because most people in Singapore are too focused on image rather than the whole music.

If I offend any bands from some of the genres I mentioned above, shove it. You should be proud that I mentioned your band's genre as one of the top leading genres in Singapore.

bro aenimic

any overseas bands that aren't one dimensional?
i'm keen to listen. currently one that came across my mind is Mars Volta
thanks bro

it's alot better now but it's gonna get even alot better soon....................................................................................................................
:D trust me.

I'm talking about the scene. It's being too one dimensional. The Singapore scene usually fishes out Indie,Brutal or just 80s Glam Rock. It's like the people of Singapore don't like to listen to new types of LOCAL bands.

Do you understand now? I'm not saying the bands.

And when I say different,I mean bands like Firebrands, Astreal..that kinda bands. They are not actually hitting it on a huge scale here. I mean, they do perform big shows, but I don't see alot of fans in Singapore.

And it's even rare to find these kinda bands coming out of Singapore. Just my thoughts of the scene right now. It's thriving, but it's too one-dimensional.

2000 - 2002 was a HUGE downturn for the local music scene. The previous boom for the underground original music scene was in 1997 - 1999.

I'm waiting for the downturn to hit again...

bro

cool.i understand your POV. what i'm asking was is there any overseas bands that aren't one dimensional?

tang quartet is of a totally different genre.

local music scene maybe deemed too 1 dimensional. that I agree.
but a lot of it was and still is DIY.that i'm proud of.
if this scene could led to an industry, albeit a small one, I'm all for it
my apologies but i'm a bit of a nationalist-minded.

if there are overseas bands that aren't 1 dimensional, its best that we learn from them.

well,I don't want to bother with overseas bands that much because whatever they do,they're bound to get their efforts paid off, one-dimensional or not. and there are alot of overseas bands that aren't one dimensional. Muse, Queens of The Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, Porcupine Tree and the list goes on.

But the purpose on this thread is about local scene, what overseas bands do..doesn't have a direct impact on us. Cept for indirect impact on fads and trends.

flips 2cents.
