as for me...

Rock:
Van Halen's brown sound - JCM800 + MXR + Ohmite VARIAC set to approximately 90 Volts A/C

Blues:
SRV - 0.13 guage + fender vibroverb w 15" + Strat w Pau Ferro

Jazz:
Wes Montgomery - thumb + gibson arch top + gibson amp

Mattias Elkundh is my current tone craze. His "neck" tone is pretty much to die for.

Ron Thal too, I like his neck tone a LOT, esp the BumbleFoot guitar.

The rest of my guitar heroes... I dunno... Vai, Gilbert, Timmons, Guthrie, etc etc, have this grainy tone, I can't stand it anymore. Either that, or a midrange honk, sticking out like a sore thumb.

I should be playing keyboards.

personal favourite 80s heavy metal tone. Akira Takasaki on Loudness 'Thunder in the East'. Eddie Kramer at the production helm.

tom morello
mike einziger
john scofield
shaun soh from sky in euphoria

..oh wait, those are my favorite guitarists!

also, smashing pumpkins, glassjaw, radiohead and van halen. i don't really like the uber-lead vai satch etc tone

the most memorable(not best!) guitar tone I heard is from Eric Clapton before he became Eric Crapton.

eh, paiseh for what? Shows that you did a great job fixing the guitar up. Heard you play it at POW and I told Stu that the tone was killer, especially the overdriven blues sound.

If I ever want to DIY a guitar, I'll know who to ask for advice

I'm surprised nobody's said it yet, but Dimebag's mid-scooped tone is my all-time favourite guitar sound..

van halen - the tone of "can't stop loving you" (clean and overdrives)
john 5 - the chorus of tainted love & sweet dreams
dan donegan - the solo tone for stricken
eric johnson - cliff of dover, srv (the cleans and the overdrives)
matt bellamy - new born, citizen erase, bliss (fuzz)
angus young - back in black, it's a long way to the top, thunderstruck (fuzz)
