Hi, I'm using a Dunlop Crybaby From Hell pedal. I want to ask you people for your opinion... When I switch on my wah the tone is more trebly and felt like there was more gain. Is it normal? Since I tried quite a number of different settings. Would you set your wah so that when you switch it on, there not be any difference in tone?

No, for me i set it so that when i switch it on it fixes me a coffee and reads me the morning news.

Seriously, what do you think a wah is for? Maybe you're a bit unclear about the nature of the effect.

Maybe he got it mixed with the "switchless" (actually there is one strategically placed on the heel position) types that is offerd nowadys.

If I don't want to change the tone of the guitar, I will switch the wah off. If you are really particular, mod for true bypass.

Otherwise, a wah does what it suppose to do. Every wah will have it's own characteristics, of course. It's up to you then to try them first before buying.

I think I am beginning to understand... So when the wah is switched on the tone definitely will change, even if I did not change the position of the pedal right...? Then is there any way to make the tone of the wah in toe-down position the same as when the wah was switched off? Thanks a lot...

A wah pedal is a like a tone knob that is controlled by the foot. So it will affect the tone when it is on, the only way to prevent it from affecting the tone is to off it.

Possible but it gets complicated....but why on chicken earth do you wanna do that ?
The wah is a simple proven technology.....just use it like everyone else.

Well there are some wahs which will automatically turn on the moment you start moving the pedal, no need to stomp on the switch to turn it on. The Ibanez Weeping Demon has that feature, and so does the Dunlop 95Q, i think.

ok dude, so i think some posts on this thread interpreted your concern with "tone suck" or loss of tone when the wah is bypassed - some wahs in the past typically are notorious for this, and i've owned 2 that had noticeable tone loss even before i knew anything about this phenomenon. i understand nowadays some of the crybabys come with true bypass switching, which would resolve that problem.

anyway, your replies seem to suggest that your issue is with turning on the wah - that sometimes you aren't able to engage it.

you could either get a switchless wah as goose and matthewchj say - some come with either optical sensors or spring-engaged mechanisms. on the flipside, the switchless ones i heard (Morley) - not my favourite wah tone at all, and they aren't true bypassed if that might be a concern of yours. also i don't see a lot of love coming from the forums about the switchless wahs available.

or you could just work on your technique in turning on the wah. it's not about "stomping hard". use the area around your toes / the ball of your forefoot to press gently downwards at an angle on the front of the wah, thus engaging the switch. it's about getting that angle right, nothing to do with using brute force and stromping it. just keep practising that technique and let us know if that works for you.

on another note - that ernie ball wah is packed with features that look pretty darn wicked. do they give the teese / rmc wahs a run for their money?

well, this is about the smoothest and lightest action wah ive ever tried, with a good sweep range, the easiest to activate/deactivate, and that on/off LED is damn useful.. Can't remember what I paid for it. But it pretty much killed my wah hunting desires.:twisted:

+1 to switchless wahs. I used to be a user of the 95Q, it was cool but i dint like the buffer.

Got a custom v847 wah modded to my specs by Goose (true bypass, RMC Wizard specs, adjustable gain and sweep) that will give any booteek wah a run for its money.

FYI i was a former Crybaby from hell user too.
