Volume Pedals

I've read from TGP that Vol pedals do suck tone, dont know true or not. Anyway, if you want to get a vol pedal, get the Ernie Ball Vol Pedal, big 1, not the VP JR which has a 250K pontientmeter or something. Thats what i read from TGP.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Goose: How bad is it? Do you have any mods for vol pedals that suck tone?

SC: Yes, I need one. :)

1) The volume knob on my guitar is hard for me to fool around with, when playing leads
2) We have totally different genres of music on our sets, so lets say Im using the BB to boost for a hard rock solo, the same boost is too loud while we play a slow ballad kinda song next up.
3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AD8B8s-n-c&mode=related&search= Check out 0.55 :P

Volume pedals sorta allow me to control my volume ON the FLY, somewhat like John Petrucci's pedalboard from hell allows him to add all kindsa effects on the fly

Why can't you adjust the settings on your boost pedals to fit the song?

I mean, I don't use the same chorus/delay settings for every song... just before the song, I adjust.

I don't see why you need to change your boost though... I use just 1 boost level/setting on my Boosty and its fine for everything, clean boost in quiet songs to metal stuff.

Having the vol pedal makes for extra headache - tone suck and having to set the vol by feel.

What if your stage that day has poor monitors? If you have to constantly adjust your vol on the fly, then what is the soundcheck for? You have to adjust volume by feel?

And its quite weird to play normal... vol is normal, come to solo, step on BB, then immediately foot the vol pedal to adjust the vol, solo ends, step on BB, then what? Up the vol pedal again?

SC:

No la, you got me wrong . If I get a vol pedal, I wouldnt be using the BB to boost anymore, Id have it permanently on.

The part about the bad monitors is very true though, but vol pedal still offers me more flexibility. Lets say in the middle of the solo in a venue with bad monitors, I suddenly realize that my solo is too loud / soft, what can I do if I have just a booster? Agreed, levels are set during soundcheck, but the monitors are supposed to screw up during the show right

So far, the tone suck is the only issue thats holding me back :(

>> active volume control using an op-amp or OTA (Operational transconductance amplifier) 8) is possible to reduce tone degration to a certain extent and it actually eliminates scrathy pot !

Ernie's can be modded also>>> see here

Why not get this or this instead!!

not being an ass...but but...why leave it permanently or on? or y even use it as a booster? or is it ure main drive?

Thanks for the info goose, Im checking it out.

tvontheradio:
It isnt my main drive. My main drive is a subdecay blackstar. BB Alone for low gain sounds, Blackstar + BB for high gain .

JP uses his vol pedal for vol swells ala voilin sounds, to switch between magnetic & piezo by just depressing the pedal.

volume pedal very important to me..dont forget that not all guitar riff part in a song have a same volume level..sometimes there might be 2-3-4 different part with different level..

Why dont you use your guitar vol knob to control? I dont see using a vol pedal to control vol a good alternative. You using a strat, Ibanez? these guitar's vol knob is near the bridge pup & should be easy to control using your pinky.

volume control before dirt = gain control ....
volume control after dirt = volume control :D

if you don't understand the above ...then stop misleading others!! :D

Bro Gsonique, im not misleading others. I maybe a beginner in pedals, but i do read up for little infos about what im using. Mybe its subjective, but i do place my vol pedal after tuner. im using a crappy FV-50H. it is designed to be placed before drv pedals. If someone wana place it after drv pedals, then should get FV-50L. Im not sure about Ernieball Vol pedals.

no worries leecs .... just wanting to clear the air on volume pedals !! :D

Btw a wah pedal can be easily modded to be a volume pedal as all it needs is a switch ...and the best part, wah pedals can be true bypassed thus eliminating tone degration!!

Whatever is lost can't be replaced in your pedal chain and don't believe if someone says otherwise ....

Tone degration is bad cause it just cuts off the essential highs which gives your tone that sparkle on stage without the need to crank amp volume any futher. Sound guys will love you.... :D Please consider wisely the choice of your gear as to enjoy your worx and to give the best to your audience ya ....

I have given up on volume pedals and incooperated a differant approach to volume swells ...eventho a volume pedals makes that action easier :(

.....somewhere in the lofi realm lies an answer 8)

Depending on the guitar I use, I do use a volume pedal in my effects chain. The reason if for the lowering my guitar's gain or volume in the event where the singer in my band starts doing his thing. I know this can be controlled via the volume knob but sometimes my hands just get a tad bit too pre-occupied and silly, I just use my feet instead. The last thing I want is to drown out my singer...

However, I do find that volume pedals do suck tone. I've been using an EB Vol pedal Jr. with my EBMM Luke, since there are active pickups in the guitar itself, there is literally no tone loss at all.

But stick in a guitar with passive pickups, and there's loads of roll off where the highs used to be. But if it's not all that important to you, the difference is really negligible.

Volume pedals which have been known to have very good tone preservation are the Goodrich and the Hilton volume pedals, previously only reserved for pedal steel players. But they have found their way to the pedal boards of several pro-musician guitars ala. Allan Hinds. 8)

Damn expensive, and impossible to find locally, but they are the real deal.

A few great ones to try out visual sound one as pointed out by gsonique, Great feauture are the LEDs which let you know which levels the pedal is at. The new boss one from what I have heard is not too bad as well.

But so far to me, my fave is the EB Vol Pedal Jr, simple to use...actually idiot proof to use, tuner-out, small in size, and great in terms of the feel. Construction wise, do bear in mind that everything is held together by a string, and it's made in malaysia! :D

Do also remember to get the right type for your type of guitar, passive or active.

volume pedal is essential to me, a must have, especially for paid gigs.and especially when you have another guitarist too.

for instance, when i take the solo, my guitarist lowers his volume using his vol. pedal, and when he does the solo, vice versa.

And you can also lower the volume using the VS volume pedal, its active, it has led lights, so it eliminates you using "feel" to adjust the volume.

Its always good to have a volume pedal on stage , cause sometimes it looks unprofessional to be fiddling with your amp or pedals when the show's started, especially if you are playing medleys of groovy dance-able songs with the crowd tuning in to u.

Also, a sound check before the crowd gets in, is not accurate for setting your stage volume, because when the crowd does come in, they will more or less tend to over-power your sound-check set volume. Thus, the soundman(if there is one) will increase the volume of the whole band, and minor adjustments of volume thru the amps will have to be done on the fly using the vol. pedal.

Also, for me la, a boost pedal is used to boost certain cleanish sounds to the slight point of breakup, and then using the guitar volume knob, adjusting the volume nicely to bring out the dynamics of the clean runs of say, slow bluesy runs...

So all in all, different strokes for different folks :D
