you can never know my friend..
the pickup selector switch may be faulty, and the connection just goes on and off..
thus the volume jump..
if not, it is most probably due to faulty cables..

if ur at the studio, pick up the provided guitars and see if theres still a problem. If there is while its just amp-guitar. Its most likely faulty cables. Faulty cables are the most common among others.

Usually for problems like this try your initial DIY troubleshooting in this hopefully more orderly way to identify and correct the fault;

1. Disconnect all pedals between your guitar and amp. Take a deep breath

2. Connect guitar directly to amp with your 1st long cable and then the rest of your other long cables to. you should b able to see if it's either the guitar, cable or amp that's causing the problem

3. Isolate and test out each of your pedals and the patch shords, twisting the jacks to spot any intermittence or crackles. Replace any of the patch chords that crackle and if it's still there then u likely have a connector problem at the in/out of the pedal.

4. If the problem is at the guitar it's usually the output jack and the pickup selector and then followed by a damaged pot and lastly unless u did a quick cold solder job swapping pickups the control cavity.
