hi ppl, I'm a total noob to guitar. Most likely, I'll have to start out on a classical guitar. Due to my irregular schedule, my first few guitar classes hasnt been successful and I've stopped learning from an instructor.

What can I do to learn guitar at my own pace?

-learn online (any good sites to recommend?)?
-learn through books (which book to buy?)?
-any other alternatives?

Thanks for your help. =D

you can start buy getting yourself a classical guitar, and then buy a good book. either at peninsula hotel or yamaha. yamaha has very good books but are a little expensive. you should start from page 1 where you learns fingerings and how to hold your guitar properly, you can ask the staff for help i'm sure they are very helpful and just tell them your queries

wow ur reply is almost instant. thanks alot! I heard there's a swee lee music company at bras basah. izzit good? peninsula hotel. ok. I'll check it out. Any specific recommendation for the book titles =D?

The learning begins. =D

nope, i haven't bought any guitar books there except for reference chord books, at swee lee you should only by guitars, accesories are quite expensive. for accesories you should get from davis. its cheaper there. :D davis is in peninsula too.

why do u want to buy a better guitar when u have one that u can practise with? save up and when u become better, upgrade!

haha spontaneous forum. i love this forum. thanks guys.

i realised http://guitar.about.com is one of the best so far. theory lessons sometimes I get abit confused with the jargons used. That's the thing I hate about being noob hah.

Once again thanks peep.

try getting your hands on vai's 10 hour workout, great for practicing techniques.. in any case.. does anyone have a copy of the 10 hour workout

Search jemsite for it. Think some ppl there have it.

Btw, DO BE CAREFUL when doing such a workout. Vai is a professional musician, his whole life is playing guitar... you would not be able to attain that kind of stamina like him. So be careful when doing this 10 hr workout. Injury is very real.

what should I get for MY first guitar? brand n model n price?

I used to have one but gave it to my cousin. after I stopped the first few guitar lessons. technically speaking that was new and bought anyhow.

any good suggestions?

my take on buying guitar:

Go to the guitar shops. Look ard and see which few appeal to u visually first. Shortlist them then try each of them unplugged, plugged in clean and with distortion. Hear if u like the sounds coming out or not. Compare and contrast each. Narrow down ur list somemore.

Finally with ur budget, go to the same few tt u've been eyeing all this while and just use plain common sense to see which u can buy and which u just can't afford :)

Bottomline: If a guitar looks good to YOU, feels good to YOU and sounds good to YOU, it's a good guitar by YOUR standards. Dun really have to care abt brand or model man. It's all abt YOU :)

thanks! didnt know peninsula is such a rich music resource.

Sidetrack; seems that Peninsular Hotel and Peninsular SC is fast becoming like a musical hub + cultural hub. Wonder why all come into 1 place (the newer shops)... and then fight for customers.

plugged in? classical guitar leh hah. for noobies. and i cant trust my newbie sound judgement.

Well, there are some accoustic guitars that can be plug in... those are the moderate to xpensive price ones lah.

Anyway, for new guitar enthusiasts, it's best that you not to get the very cheapest rig or the very expensive ones. Especially Kapok brand (remember this brand real hard) as they sound shit and they can't last long! Unless you are 1 rich noob boy, buying the most high end rig while you earn your daily bread thru cold and hot sweat and sweet tears and you're still unsure of your future in the guitar world can be total waste of money.

1 thing for sure for noobies, you may wanna start with accoustic but in the end of the road many years later, don't be surprise to find yourself exclusively well in playing drums or bass or even harmonica.

i still think get a damn bad lousy guitar for a start, i dun know abt electric much, but if u toking abt classical and acoustics.... get a really bad wan... but not those that will have bussing sound...
get something that realli makes u difficult for u to hold chords and notes, those that the strings are far away from the fret board...

den when u improve, u will realli appreciate good guitars and will have very smooth finger techniques... though im not that pro yet.. but i realli benefit from this.
right now i still dun own a good guitar cuz no money, BUT willl get a good wan, preferably solid top, by march!!!, arg damn it, dreamming for that man!

however, for performances and exam i will borrow from my frenz. yup...
