Guitars -

(1) An old red Epiphone LP, my first guitar ever, bought on the last day of my O'levels no less!. Real sentimental value, that one. But totally beaten up and rusty electronics, dead pots etc. I don't think its in working condition now.

(2) a strange Suzuki guitar that looks the size of a tiny LP, with the coolest pickups ever. I picked it up at some thrift electronics store in Chiangmai in 97 or so, and its like nothing i've ever seen before. Real quirky item. Pickups are very microphonic though. Sorry, no pics as of yet. But assuredly, its very cool.

(3) a mid 90s Clapton strat. Lace sensor golds, shallow v neck profile, with a mid boost and a tbx. Its an interesting guitar, especially with the mid boost, which can really push the guitar over the edge. Have always wanted a strat, but the funny thing is that the claptons don't sound much like strats, at least not thru my amp, which is very easily overdriven. I think the pickups are very very hot, especially with the mid-boost which i hear is always on in some degree even if its turned to zero. Ok let me rephrase that -- the Clapton sounds very modern when played for overdrive, but with enough headroom and a big enough amp, it can do vintage-like clean 2 and 4 positions quite nicely. THe rhythm pickup with mid-boost engaged can be described in one word -- powerful. The lovely thing abt strats is that they cut through the band very well, and never gets buried. At least thats what i rem because i havent played with a band for years!

(4) A newish Gibson ES 335 RI in cherry (at least, i think its an RI. Not sure if there's a 'stock' model). This is a new baby that i haven't decided if i want to keep or not. This guitar is the most well-balanced guitar of the lot. The chords ring out very clearly and the pickups are really good. The tone knob is also very responsive to slight tweaks. Rolling it off turns the guitar nice and jazzy without losing too much definition. Full-on tone gives a nice sparkly jangle with that boomy, roomy and woody vibe of a semi. I still somehow prefer strat tones though (cleanish through an easily overdriven amp-- my perfect blues tone!), so i may let go of this one sometime in teh future.

Stuff I wish i had
(1) A Fender jag-stang in baby blue, just because.

(2) Gibson Flying V. Either a wine red one or a natural korina finish with covered humbucks. This has been my dream guitar since i was 16.

(3) an SG. not sure which year, but the one with the larger, fiercer pickguard in heritage cherry. Just so I can pretend i'm Robbie Krieger of the Doors, who does some crazy lines and runs, maybe the one of the most underrated songwriter/guitarists of his time.

Pedals

Not a pedal person, but i've got an EQ and an EH Holy Grail reverb solely because....

Amp

... the amp i use is the model of minimalism. On-off, and volume, thats it. This is why i need off-board EQ and reverb. I understand its some hobbyist project by Mudmechanic (btw is he still around? i called him the other day but he seems to have changed his no. Anyone who knows, PM me?). THe little that i do know abt the amp is that its modelled after an old Fender Champ, but housed in a really really old Gibson skylark body. Its a very charming little 5watt tube amp that breaks up very nicely at bedroom volumes with one 6v6 tube. There is something abt a full tube that just sounds right. Its like the guitar sounds 3-dimensional. Hours of fun playing with teh volume knob on the guitar to get that nice in-between just breaking up sound.

Free to try?
Haha i gotta find time for myself first!!!

Btw this is my first post after lurking for a bit, so hello all! I'm a typical bedroom guitar player whose gear is way too good for him. Heh, but i;m sure there are many of those around. How to practise when you got work? SOmeone find out and tell me...
