We aren't allowed to make deals across the fare gates. A fine of up to $2,000 can be charged for doing so cause MRT stations are for transportation only.

The party from inside the station must tap their card and cross into the other side then able to make a business transaction but that is also considering if they will affect the flow of BUSINESS and passenger movement.

WOW. WOOOOOOOWWWWW. It's not like people who want to deal will stand right smack in between the fare gates and make a transaction and smile smile and wank around. Totally unnecessary rule.

However the main reason is "The purpose of the rapid transit system is to transport passengers".

This will definitely hinder the online 2nd hand buy/sell market. Firstly, it's quite a risk to NOT meet at an MRT station (in case of scams and such), and secondly, I don't think alot of people would want to pay for their transport when they just need to pass something to a buyer/seller.

I mean, at least the MRT personnel can tell (the inconsiderate) people who want to deal to do it faster and not hinder traffic. Why is there a need to fine $2,000?

here goes, send them a mail and see if they still bother to reply, after what has already been reported in the paper. It should be more useful then us wondering here and throwing in comments

oh anyway, the fine 2k is the maximum find they can imposed. So far, i dont think there are many people who broke the railway law in singaland(be it eating/drinking, smoking, pressing the emergency stop plunger for fun and any other dumb thing) actually gotten fine the maximum.

theres a minimum and maximum fine. Most either let off with warning or pay minimum fines.

Hehe, wanna pay maximum also not easy

the railway regulation board, i have seen it in mrt stations. Its one whole load of words. Doubt many actually see it or bother to go read.

it has been around for years, many years infact(including the no transaction thingy).

actually i dont feel comfortable dealing at mrt..
some got no parking area, peak hours jam pack with ppl,
last but not least counting your cash in front of 100 million ppl walking by..

That's why I'm abit unhappy about it. I do think usually they give a warning, but the thought of the fine being that high. What if your luck is shit on a certain day? :( So to avoid this, I didn't mean to create this thread to make a whole whinefest but more of how do we find other alternatives? Safer alternatives? Maybe meet at Starbucks?

i have quite a bit of transactions at mrt stn as well. Since theres such dumb rule(which, imho, is). Just tapped out the ez link card, deal outside the station. They have the rule, we go past it and proceed, not banging into it and hopping it will change

If still wanna deal inside, either hope the staff "close one eye"/try to talk way out/get the staff to get ready their offence form and get ready for them to write story, you sign and wait for payment/appeal

do like ns men do.. just dont get caught.. haha
just be safe than sry, try avoid deal at mrt.. i think its for the better

Suggestions for dealing places? Cause it's scary meeting someone you never knew before at under a void deck.

I think SMRT should be more lenient and come out with an appropriate compromise to suit both parties.

I feel the rule would be best applied during peak hours. That's the timing where such sales would be a hindrance to the flow of passenger traffic. But other than those timings, I suppose there wouldn't be such a big issue in allowing such transactions to be conducted over the fare gates.

I mean who would want to waste close to 2 dollars just by tapping out. Perhaps SMRT would take a more flexible and lenient approach to this.
