Spain 2-0 Russia
Villa 20' 45'
Half-time report
Spain have taken a 2 goal lead thanks to David Villa's double strikes, the first after a long clearance from Carlos Marchena found Fernando Torres and set him free. He squared to an unmarked Villa to fire past Igor Akinfeev on 20 minutes. Russia carved out their chances too, Roman Pavlyuchenko hitting the post when he really should have scored from close range and again from the rebound from a free kick, volleying with his left foot a curling, dipping shot that beat Iker Casillas but bounced off the crossbar. In any case, he had already committed a foul before hitting it. The Spanish defence has been found wanting several times and they really do need to tighten up the midfield, like the Russians. The 2nd goal though, was pure genius. Andres Iniesta received Sergio Ramos' pass and he made a defence-splitting pass to put it on a plate for Villa, who slotted past Akinfeev. The pass was the stuff of legends, going through 2 defenders' feet and completely eluding the rest to give Villa the easiest of chances. If Spain are to keep hold of this lead, they must continue to hold the ball and pass it as well as they have done in this first half. The defence and midfield must be more compact, not giving the Russians space to move the ball around. The Russians must continue to keep their midfield and defence compact, and take advantage of their set pieces, twice they have shaken the frame of the goal from a set piece. Most importantly, they must improve on their finishing if they are to claw back into this game.
