Half-time report:
Croatia 1-0 Germany
Srna 24'
Well well well so the mighty Germans are on the losing end of this contest now! Undone by a patient and tight Croatian midfield that won ball after ball to feed the strikers. Both sides had their chances; the only difference was that Germany did not convert theirs. Srna's goal came on 24 minutes, an Ivan Rakitic cross finding him 4 yards from the goalmouth. Marcell Jansen miscalculated the ball's flight and Srna poked home for the Croats. Not long after, Germany got their 1st shot on target, after Michael Ballack's stinging free-kick stung the palms of Croat goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa. About 10 minutes later, a Torsten Frings corner was headed narrowly over the bar by Christoph Metzelder. Then. Jens Lehmann pulled a good reaction save to deny Niko Krancjcar. The analysis is that for Croatia, that their gameplan is working excellently, the number of chances they have created. It was a masterstroke, putting Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric in midfield, where Torsten Frings and Michael Ballack have struggled to stamp their authority on. The willingness of the fullbacks to push up has also been a deciding factor. Germany ahve 1 weak link at the back: Marcell Jansen. Too many times has he given the ball away cheaply or mis-calculated an in-swinging cross; the mistake that led to the goal. He is much better going forward though, putting in some good passes and crosses, although Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose have not been able to take them. The Germans need to tighten up the midfield and defence, and allow the Croats no space to move the ball around, thus giving Modric and Rakitic a difficult time. The Croats have to stick with their gameplan; is has born fruit thus far.
