Done:
Orange Drop tone capacitor upgrade
Switchcraft jack upgrade
Nordstrand pickup upgrade
Dunlop straplock upgrade

To do:
Wood filler for old pickguard holes, drill new ones for new pickguard.
Install new Thomastik-Infeld strings, setup bass

:D

I would post photos, but it looks exactly like a normal P-bass 8O

Something's not right... doesn't it make a little more sense to drill holes in the PG instead of in the bass? Unless it's a completely different shape or something right?

You must let us know how it sounds after the mods - and pray tell what on earth are orange drop caps? How are they different from normal capacitors?

No... see, this was an Allparts 13-hole pickguard for MIA basses. Apparently the screw alignment is about 2-3mm off between the MIA and MIJ guards, so if I use the current screw holes my screw heads won't be flush with the guard.

Also, on Orange Drop caps:

Certain brands such as Orange Drop Caps have been known to have a much more gradual tone drop, and many people highly recommend them.

I plugged in the bass without strings today and did the "tap the polepieces with a screwdriver" thing while turning the tone pot. It did seem more gradual, which is good for me because on a stock CIJ Fender cap, the tone pot on "0" just gave me cottony sound. Either way, we'll find out when I finish stringing it up soon :) I guess at S$1.60, it's not that much of a hit on the wallet anyway.

Chris: Nope... this one's all about making things look stock until you plug them in ;) Then again it's a P-bass... supposed to be kept simple and there's not much you can mod that directly affects the sound a lot anyway :/

Angry: Was considering a Badass II but I figured it would take away from the P-bass vibe... maybe a Gotoh 201 when I finish BMT, that would be nice... 8) Will change out tuners as well when I have the time/money. The fundamental design of the bass bridge hasn't changed in years, so the only thing you can do is get a heavier one for (percieved?) focused tone and sustain.

Meanwhile I have to concentrate on getting that Lakland and a 3-ply mint pickguard to go with it...

It's finished!! Should be here by the end of the week :) I can't wait to hear how it sounds, esp with the Fatstacks and TI jazz rounds!!

If it sounds/plays as good as it looks, and if all goes according to plan, you may very well be looking at RDM custom j #001 ;)

Just got a shot of my basses. Let me introduce them to ya'll:

MIA '62 reissue P Bass

Cheers!

wow. a 5 stringer with the pegs all on one side. they should really make ALL their 5 stringers like that. the ones with 1 on the other side just look ugly, IMO. =(

exin: err... actually the knob fell and i procrastinated/forgot to fix it back on. too used to it =) No modifications to both basses

crispyegg: yes! The tuners on one side looks much better! Having one stick out on the other side looks quite off... imo, no offense to the pple who like/own basses liddat

I embarked on a small project to change the colour of my bass body yesterday ... sanding down the old layer of oil coat and using wood dye to change the colour to a walnut/mahagony colour ... okay, it didn't really turn out the colour that i wanted but it looks really nice.

check out the links above ... =) the pictures are a little huge that's why i won't put it here ...
