The Bass Picture Gallery

Jpj

Yea JPJ-config for limitless tonal possibilities. If only she had underbridge piezos...

I haven't named her so you guys inspired me. Her name shall be:

Jaycee Phoebe Jules.

Haha. damn random.

tone

Extremely versatile, but maybe to the point of confusing.

Tried all pickups together, but sound came out pretty boomy with no distinction. Not as exciting as I thought it'll be. Tends to sound better with the more conventional PJ, JJ or P settings.

After playing around for about 2 weeks, I still haven't pretty much explored much of it. The selections give too much of a choice.

However, when configured to Neck J and Ps with bass and high boost and mid scooped, the slap tone was fantango!

The action was setup perfect for tapping and hammering, and the asymmetric oval neck is thin and fast. Perfect for me who plays mostly finger-style.

New toy with a cool ash neck just arrived :)

Took a group shot too...

the group shot had brought this thread to a new high...
i got super high after looking at it. ;)

you should own six 6-string, not five.:p

fretless, those are nice basses you have there!

How's the Jeffrey Yong Custom? I'm looking at a single-cut custom 5 string. May want to custom one with him.

And I love your Yamaha as well! How'd you get the figured top?

Tonally, the Jeffrey Yong is awesome, very deep growly fingerstyle tone. Very Roscoe like. Largely credits to the Bartolinis. Biggest drawback is that it's heavy as hell =) Which is partially due to my specs which included an extra wide neck, which stays wide even at the nut.

There are pros and cons with working with Jeffrey Yong. Firstly, he doesn't have the best communication with his customers. His work isn't the most meticulous. But he definitely doesn't cut back on quality parts. He threw in stuff like top grade Abalone block inlays, macassar ebony control cavity cover, etc all for free.

But if you intend to custom order an instrument, I seriously seriously recommend Chris Stambaugh. His prices are on par with Jeffrey Yong and his options are alot more varied. His build quality is also top notch. IMO better than my Benavente which cost twice as much. His order/build time is almost a year at this point, buts its well worth the wait.

Info and pictures on his site doesn't do justice to his work, but here it is for pricing and contact info if you need it. He can do any body shape design too:

Where else can you get a fully custom built, high end, brand new instrument like this for US$2200?

For the Yamaha, it came with a flame maple veneer. Very thin veneer, but real wood veneer, not printed paper. Staining it really brought out the flames, unlike the stock transparent color finishes.

1mband, don't tempt me. I almost bought a Ken Lawrence fretless, my wallet cried out just in time.
