The albums that Kiled it.

The Smashing Pumpkins
Made it: Siamese Dream
Killed it: Adore (it signalled a new era of SP sound, which I don't mind but the paradigm shift shaved off their followers)

I beg to differ. Adore was more of a personal album for Billy as he had to deal with the lost of band members and his mom during that era. Adore still very much had that SP flavor to it only with the exception of the Muff-driven riffs and Jimmy's drumming.

What killed it to me would have been Zeitgeist even though that album was quite good IMO. Billy should have just continued and expanded with Zwan, leaving SP as the iconic band that it was.

Matthew Sweet
Made it: Girlfriend, Altered Beast
Killed it: Blue Sky on Mars

REM
Made it: everything between Chronic Town and New Adventures
Killed it: Up

Public Enemy:
Made it: Nation of Millions, Fear of a Black Planet
Killed it: Muse Sick

Massive Attack
Made it: Blue Lines, Protection, Mezzanine
Killed it: 100th Window

David Bowie
Made it: everything from the Man Who Sold the World to Scary Monsters
Killed it: Tonight onwards

I liked Adore. But it signalled a shift to electronic-based music as compared to their heavy fuzz guitar rhythms. Which in turned pave it's way for Machine I/II. Although the concept behind Machina is excellent (a story told through each song throughout the album), and SP pioneered the 'free' albums with Machina II as opposed to Radiohead's In Rainbows, the overall fanbase for SP died from the paradigm shift.

I love Zwan though. In fact I like all SP stuff, even Zeitgeist. Only most people don't echo the same sentiments as me.
