Actually, Leo Fender himself wasn't a guitarist, and actually, was a bit hard of hearing. The Tele was designed by him in 1952 to create the Electric Spanish Guitar. Everybody laughed then.
Then Gibson realised that they were stealing market share, and came up with the Les Paul.
But Leo Fender's main goal, along with Freddie Travares, was to build the ultimate practical instrument. You can buy one, and replace the neck whenever you need, hence the bolt-on construction. The Strat was designed not just by him, but with a lot of feedback from many other musicians most notably Bill Carson. He worked on their inputs and sculpted the designs to fit their needs. The use of 3 pups, the whammy bar, the arm contour, the tummy cut etc etc.
So it was much more improved this time round because of input from other musicians compared to the Tele which was a original design fom him. Leo Fender himself never learnt to play the guitar...
