Telecaster or LesPaul

Hmm.

Honestly I feel that while both instruments are very versatile in their own right (general encompassment of the Les Pauls and Telecasters available), I would favour the telecaster. Why? Great cleans on its own, and generally good distortion is pretty much in the tweaking of your pedals and amp.

When I think of a Tele, I'm reminded of the roadhouse twang. The kind of twang that only a Tele can give you.
I mean, that's why people go for Teles in the first place, right? Aesthetics aside.

Following in that line of thought, there really is no point in getting a Tele if you plan to stick in humbuckers and all.
I personally would never emulate John 5 nor Jim Root.

A Tele with super-hot pups will give you an acceptable heavy sound.
But a Les Paul, fitted with low-output single coils, can never and will never give you that true Tele twang!

I wouldn't say it has a unique clean sound.
The tele, to me, has like a split personality.
With the neck pup only, you get this obsencely fat, warm and smooth bluesy tone.
With the bridge pup only, you get this dog-chewing-on-my-leg kinda biting sound, without the ice-pick tone. Helps to cut through the mix in a band context.

I would recommend the Tele route.

You have more leeway to try mods and to establish what features really work for you on a guitar.

yup the tele is a very versatile guitar. the les paul has a bass growl. very good for rhythm stuff with a nice sharp bite in the bridge and smooth sounds on the neck IMO. you shuld go try them out personally to see which one fits your playing style better.

imo the bridge does give the ice-pick tone. But on my basswood tele , the bite is terrible and harsh. Its really ear bleeding. Always considered swapping my caps to 0.1 or something. Other stuff to consider is the metal composition in the bridge , the saddles ( brass or steel or titanium or the recent graphtec IOS )

There are differences between a basswood tele and the alder tele. Get what you like.

lots great tele tones ( duh ) + cats and birds + animal sounds in Roy Buchs music.

Glenn from Surreal. Its 5 way wired.

Field teo from Caracal , i admire his effortless ways on the tele. and not forgetting his math phrases.

imo the 52 blackguard tele ( its the yummy butterscotch tele ) has a very very very obvious stinging tone of brass.

guess its enough. have fun. pm me if you need anything else.

whoa, i watched all the videos you gave. especially the funk jam.

thanks for all these videos.

thanks for all the advise and patience guys! i think i somehow get what you mean by distinct tele tones.

when I go and buy/try the guitar, i'll prolly bring a distortion pedal too.

btw, caracal's guitarist is indeed gooddd.

That's because you're looking for a Tele twang. Of course only a Tele will give that. Same as the quack and pop on a Strat. You'll only get it on a Strat. But surely the LP has clean tones that are equally usable as well.

There's also a very nice pop to the clean tones or low driven tones on an LP with original PAFs that only an LP can give. Very hollow and almost wooden tone. Nothing else gives you that except a good old LP.

I think there are merits to both designs. Mainly what you prefer.

You are right. So threadstarter would have to decide what he's after.

I'm just a fan of the Tele twang, and I find it pointless for one to get a Tele and not focus or appreciate its uniqueness and capabilities. Or a Les Paul, for that matter.

don't forget to test the squier tele custom (loaded with 2 humbuckers) or custom2 (using SD p-90 pups) guitars. they are awesome! bought mine (tele custom) @ RM 930 in 2004. That should suits ur budget.

i would definitely want that. but SweeLee sells it for $550 i think.i saw the price tag.

abit steep for me. saving up is possible though. just gotta be patient haha

although i absolutely love strats and teles , i think you should get a les paul , more versitile plus powerful humbuckers are sexy

well , not answering on behalf of the original thread starter but the term " versatile" umm...take it with a pinch of salt. Eg. The strat being a very versatile guitar , the point is , i don't want the strat tone because the tele tone is what i want. get the drift? :D:D
