Talent Vs Hardwork in Guitar Playing?

Cause that once upon a time, i heard an interesting opinion from other forum that says playing music requires 70% talent and 30% hardwork. Don't know how true is it?

Is there such a thing as natural gift talent? or it's just plain hardwork?

lols... i think a famous scientist from the past(cant remember his name now) was being praised of his works n how much of a genius he is. But the scientist said 'i put in 99% hardwork n 1% talent'. I guess what we're trying to potray here is the ratio in amt of hardwork you put in despite your talent. Only then, you'll become someone big. Just my opinion ^^

i think it was Albert Einstein haha and i agree with that, you can be talented but without hard work, it'll develop into nothing, UNLESS your just one really lucky guy haha

imo, if you have 2 hands for playing guitar, you're probably already talented.

learning and practising EFFICIENTLY is the rest to being good at guitar.

My analogy,

Hard work; Practice until you reach that standard.

Talent with hard work; Need not practice so much to reach that standard.

So talent to me is the ability to pick things up quickly and having high adaptability in making music.

I believe in whatever Taylorboy87 said...

But in addition.. I believe there's a certain few who get that notch higher than the rest. That's talent / virtuosity... and hard work alone isn't enough to get you up that last notch.

there was a clip of a street musician on you tube and was circulating on some forums some time back. He didnt have arm/hand and was playing guitar with both his leg, one fretting, one strummin. It sounded pretty decent and theres people walking by who never really bother with him

imho, thats talent and hardwork, plus the real side of life that we shud see.

and then we have the problem of defining someone talented and someone hardworking. for all you know a person who claims to have gotten up with hard work may just be talented.

Hahaha... somehow, on first read, your post reminds me of the times back in school, some genius claims to have "not studied at all", yet passes with flying colours...

admit it shred, we are stupid, not them clever or talented

man, you nuts! You broke my metal hard as graphite heart of harden space age material with mind and touch of kuniang soft like new age sensitive guy, HEART!

I demand a guitar duel! Between my hardwood(yes, wood, not work), i wanna taste your talent!

Time and location, your choice, let me know and i be there, like bong giovi,

i be there for your
these 5 words i swear to you
when you breath, i wanna be the air for you
i be there for chooooooo

i would define hard work as being able to practise effectively and proficeiently. Talent determines how fast are you able to pick up the instrument, have a good ear for melodies, perfect pitch, etc.

Hahaha... Pathein... I saw your post on that thread - hilarious. I do agree with that post though... but - who cares right?

Anyway, Threadstarter - what do you hope to gain from a thread like this? Lay down all hope if you decide that you don't have talent? Strive on with 30/hrs per day guitar workouts? What's the point of the thread?

ok, "serious pathein mode turned on", serious as f**k from here onwards!

Let see it from what shred has mentioned, purpose of hardwork vs talent

Usually along the journey of playing guitar, we migh often reach the point of getting tired and jaded. Especially the more when we see prople who are really good in their craft, the more we practice, the less we find it meaningfull or usefull as time goes on

cud it be we are too focus on the craft of playing guitar, just guitar or that in the process, we fail to notice music in general, other than guitar practice and playing.

when after we practice, how do we gauge the level of practice? Thru the ability to do something well and repeatedly well doing same thing or able to produce music as a piece in general over the focusing on guitar as the main music?

when we practice, what do we want to achieve? To be able to play well and play same thing over and over again or use it as an aid to do music other than music focusing on guitar?

heh, "serious senile and confused mode off" lets do it like wheres wally, find the difference and similarity

haha... pathein, I dare not diss thee!

But frankly, I would like to know why the Threadstarter posted this... I recall he posted other threads expressing his disappointment and struggles with guitar playing - I hope the current thread actually turns out to help him, not break him.

I think one can tell - PURPOSE is key in many things.

i really love your opinion on this...

yeah what you said is true meaning that "what is the exact purpose of practicing guitar always?", isn't it just for making our technically better but what about our musical sense..i don think practicing can improve on that.

Maybe there are 2 points...

Hardworking Guy - Improves mainly by practice
Talented Man - Improves by his musical sense...

Don know whether make sense...wow, i think the amount of time spend on my practice could be fruitless after cause i wasn't focus on the musical side

Hi Shred Cow, the main purpose i posted this, because i was asking myself whether am i really that talented in music or just that i'm trying hard to cheat myself?

Yeah i've had my struggles and i would like to go back learning under a teacher rather than sheer self teaach or tabs...
