Any1 noes how to prolong it?recently read this article,1 of the 7 string guitar master Dino Cazares said," EXTRA FRET - PAINTED NECKS.SERIOUSLY... IT GIVES ME MORE SUSTAIN!".Is it true?or is there anyway, instead of using the effect pedal? :?: 8O

keys to long sustain

1.high output pickups
2.high gain on the amp
3.good vibrato technique
4.compressor

These are the main keys for sustain when playing WITH distortion on an electric guitar. I dont think factors like the neck joint affects it as much as the factors listed above. Of course a well made guitar will have more sustain but i dont think it will matter that much if you follow the keys above. Of course a fernandes sustainer will be the easy way out :)

tissue paper?.... wah...

neckthru guitars have alot of sustain. next would be setneck guitars like lespauls... personally i dun mind bolt ons... dun seem to have any difference...

I agree with Hofner! I stuff tissue paper inside the tremolo cavity on the back of all my guitars.. works very well!!! U guys shd go try it if u dun care abt the looks of ur guitar manz... keke

but adding tissue papaer would contribute by?.... i would guess adding to the overall mass of the guitar?...

so light haha...it also removes the hollow sound and vibrations.

long sustain...something similar to Gary Moore parisienne walkways live solo?

hmm...abt the painted neck and the frets ...i dont think it contribute to sustain IMHO.

finger vibrato...or vol pedal perhaps... shld do the trick..

ya neck thrus have a very long sustain, compared to set neck (which would be in 2nd placing) and followed by a bolt on neck

I think it also has to depend on ur rig, and type of guitar. I have bolt-ons which can sustain to the heavens. Might be also due to the heavier string gauges.

a lil break down..

1. String mass - the thicker the longer the sustain
2. Pick-up output - the higher the better it is at picking up string vibration
3. Amp gain - a very crude compressor, but add most of the sustain
because it cranks up the tiniest of volume to distortion
4. Compressor. - make louder sounds softer and softer sounds louder, so
its makes those "trailling" part of your sustain audible

the vibrato part wouldnt be part of a natural string sustain. but it'll be good if you know how to use it well.

I think the Gary moore kinda sustain came with a little amp feedback.
though not distinctly audible the amp is contributing to the sustain.
