Suhr Shiba and Riot Alert!

Before anything else, just a disclaimer: I don't work for any guitar shop and I really just want to share my discovery to those who don't know this yet. I haven't even bought anything yet from the shop that I'll mention later. So please just take this as a PSA.

I was walking at Excelsior's guitar shop area yesterday and I found at Woodworkz a very reasonably-priced Shiba. I also saw a Riot but didn't see the price since they're already closed. I know that some people are seriously GASsing for this and are even willing to pay quite exorbitant prices since these pedals are quite hard to find.

Btw, for those who have/had the Shiba, how does it really sound? Based on the write-up it seems to be a TS variant but I'd like to hear from people who has experience with it.

These pedals are going for 200USD new on ebay and there are now plenty to go around... I wonder if Woodworkz prices them right since I can easily get one for say... 220USD.

a little upzz for this thread since threadstarter has made the move to discuss boutique gear again:)
heard wonderful stuff from the riot but even more wonderful stuff from the shiba, would rly love to hear it for myself! if im not wrong the shiba is a little smoother compared to the standard ts.

Woodwerkz sells them at $299.

I own the riot and i must say its a really solid pedal. The tones you get from this baby is amazing. It does high gain modern tones just right, able to hit the ballparks of a bogner, diezel and marshall's jcm series. ( At least to my ears ).
The toggle switch allows for the range of mids to be scooped, flat and boosted increasing the versatility of this pedal.
Its been my main drive since i've got it. Do note that if you're attempting to obtain vintage tones from this pedal, its not the one for you.

I got mine for $230 :D and worth every penny.

For the shiba, ive not tried it neither do i know anyone who owns one.. I do see many of them going off on TGP though. Unsure of its quirks and strengths. Maybe a shiba user can enlighten us here.

That mentioned i know Lemon_zed owns the Tonefreak Severe. Anyone else wanna tell us how that compares to the riot? I find them having similar characteristics.

Nice, I want to get a Riot too. I can't recall but can the Riot run at higher voltages?

I've read that the Shiba outclasses the Handwired TubeScreamer (which actually sounds very nice on it's own) so that makes me very intrigued.

Speaking of high gain... I've an AMT Electronics P-1 and a Rockett 10 Ton Hammer coming in. It's amazing how many flavours of drive there are.

The Shiba I saw was selling for 299sgd. By conversion(1usd = 1.4sgd) plus shipping and tax, I'd say it's a very good deal.

@superpotato: Do you find the Riot as having a very sensitive set of controls? I had a Pinnacle 2 about 2 months ago and the problem I had with it is that it would take me some time to match with whatever amp is available. Just a bit of movement from the tone knob and you have to re-adjust again the prescence knob. My aural perception of the Pinnacle and its ilk is that they tend to sound like mastered cd versions of the tone they are emulating. Maybe high gain pedals is not for me and I'm more of a pedal stacking kind of guy.

@keithC: Thanks for supporting my initiative. I guess someone just has to do it. haha.. May not be my cup of tea if it's super smooth like say, the zendrive. But it looks good with that irresistable blue.: )

@Edgie: For the riot i wouldnt say its the most touch sensitive pedal i've played, but yea it is to a certain extent. That depends on you i guess, i've never wampler's pedals so im not too sure about the comparison. Sorry. To some, the riot sounds crappy with low gain, labelling it as blend, plastic, artificial. For me i play with my volume knob quite a bit to this end. The riot personally to me would act as a nice stand alone pedal and a clean boost to kick it up when solo time comes in would serve beautifully. Stacking additional gain provides too much compression and saturation i find, maybe because im using a Maxon OD-9 for that purpose but can come in handy when the song requires it :/

@Shredcow: The Riot can run from 4v-18v maximum being at 20v and the optimum being at 9v. An interesting point to note about the riot. If you are a 9v battery fan this pedal has the bonus feature that it will indicate when the battery is about to die and switches to true bypass when it does so as not to interrupt the signal path.. Wow nice good stuff you've got coming.

OT: Just reminded me of the question, why is it no shop seems to be interested in Rockett Pedals? They seem to have a good line up of pedals. Pretty much like Wampler.

superpotato - thanks for the affirmation. Ever since I went with 8 strings, I realised I want less saturation and more thump... so usually a higher voltage can help. Time to pay a visit and maybe walk away with a Riot... and the shiba.

edgie - business ain't good nowadays for the boutique side of things. That said - go try the Flex Drive. THAT is a good jack-of-all-trades pedal, I'm very impressed with it.

Aside: I am not a fan of Wampler... I find his drive designs noisy (Triple Wreck, Plextortion). The Triple Wreck would make for a very very very nice bedroom pedal though... a ton of un-piercing-grind.

Hi superpotato_30,

Can the Riot do chugging...ala metallica or newer Dream theatr tones..with the full gain?

Thax

I'm not superpotato but I did try some Metallica chug with it. Impressive, but I'd recommend the Blackstar DistX for that instead.
