Greetings all

let´s talk about strings. what do you use/ why?

i keep coming back to GHS. i tried lots of stuff but i´m with GHS. occassionally i´d buy other brands but this´ll always make me go back to GHS.

anyway, i´m currently trying the DR Black Coated set. just curious to know whether it´s a gimmick. but currently i find it to be smoother in feel, in fact, i´m kinda addicted to it...

Aahhh.... strings, yesh. Number one problem I have is RUST. Dunno why, probably my hands...

THe ones I´ve tried are Gibson, Ernie Ball and D´Arddario. D´Arddario works fine for me. The brightness lasts quite a while and the tension is lower. Hmm... this ´Black Coated´ thingy is interesting. Pardon my ignorance. LOL... might just try it the next time round

d´addarrio guage 9 for me. started off with it and "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

oh and elixir for my acoustic becos i seldom change strings. tone is getting worse after 3 months of use but deterioration is way slower than normal strings. great for lazy pple like me.

live33 think u got sweaty palm/hand? my friend with sweaty palm has gotta change strings every few weeks and thats stretching it. always rusty his strings... trade off for all the excuse-grenade in army... hehe

icon_razz.gif

u could try string cleaner or just wipe ur strings more after playing. leaving less sweat on the strings might help? i dunno... just an idea

I personally use Gibson Brite Wires 09s.. i think they last me longer for other brands except Elixir, which are super expensive.

How much did you buy ur Gibson Brites for? Gauge 9? thx alot =)

I juz broke my High-E string... wat da hell.... stupid man .... how do you prevent string breakage?

Cheers,

I bought my Gibson Brite Wires for less than $10.. sorrie i dun knoe the exact price

.

How to make your strings last longer? Personally, i wipe any grime or sweat off everytime i play with a cloth. Keep you guitar in a less humid environment or in a case.

Seriously, Gibson Brite Wires are a good alternative in my opinion *own preference*, but i still think Elixir strings are the best. it lasts 10 times longer than normal strings... sounds 10 times better than normal strings... and costs 3-4 times more expensive than normal strings... like say.. $20+ ? Forget it.

In order of my favourite strings.

Elixir Coated Nanoweb/Polyweb - Gibson Brite Wires - D´addario Electric Light .

By the way, Gibson has just came up with some Hydrophobic Strings in their accessories list. Haven´t tried it though.

What´s up?

Elixir costs SGD25

D´addario SGD5.50

Dun really like the tone of Brite wires...tried it for a while and EB Slinkys as well.

Ended up using D´addario...hear that GHS is pretty good haven´t had the chance to test it out...

Try using GHS FastFret...ever since I started using FF, my strings NEVER rusted b4.

left this out:

i´m happy with the PRS strings in my PRS
icon_cool.gif
it feels smooth & light. i even have PRS strings in my Gibson- it´s the quirky .0095 set, slightly thicker than the .009... well, this one´s got the shreadbility of a .009 & bendability of the .010

keep moisture off the strings for longer string life. the cheapest way- wipe with dry cloth. i use string cleaner & can see how much grime i contribute to my strings after the wipe...
icon_razz.gif

I usually just use a piece of tissue, fold it to an elongated shape, wrap it around a string, pinch the string lightly and run it up and down from bridge to nut and back. And the sound it makes makes my hair stand on ends...
icon_lol.gif

I´ve tried one of those strings cleaners before, which I think must be water based or something. ´Cos after cleaning, it sounds great, but a day later, it´s even more rusty than without the cleaner... hmm...

DR strings lasts very long for me. I´m a converted DR user now.

I use FastFret to clean my strings and they feel smooth and nice.

edder- that´s my dad´s opinion too, he says the DR lasts (he plays bass).

i might just embrace DR for the time being, until i´m lured back to GHS...
icon_lol.gif
the DR i tried some time back were stiff strings, so it makes low end chugging more enjoyable, my solos were restrained by these. however, after trying those black coated set, i have a fresh opinion on this brand name. maybe they had a recent quality/ performance revision...

Yo subversion!

What´s D.R? Where could i get em and how much ? thx =)

I find D´Addario da cheapest and it´s good enuff =)

Cheers,

DR- is a string brand name. available at Davis. cost more than the D´addario, about $3 difference. a black coated set can easily buy you 3 sets of d´addario
icon_smile.gif

got it at davis. and not the black ones. actually i´m not aware that DR have black ones.

the only black coated strings i know is Black Diamond, also sold at Davis.

a simple search on Google will lead you to their website.

actually ed, i wasn´t aware of the black coated DR set either, until i was at Davis.

i saw a friend of mine perform with the Black Diamond set & i thought it was really cool because people thought there were actually no strings on the guitar from a distant
icon_lol.gif
(against a black finish & that dark rosewood). so i thought i´d try the black diamond set but knowing that DR has its own version, i went for the latter. it has this smooth feel that actually makes me play better
icon_razz.gif
(it´s my mind playing tricks on me actually) but the DR black coated is now in my PRS too... just have to try...
