Speaker Sound Uniformity Problems

Hi,

Just sharing about the problem I'm having wif my Laney LV200 65W combo amp.
I'm using the clean channel of my amp with distortion pedals.
When I stand right in front the amp...no matter what setting I set for my pedals, the sound came out wif lots of 'treble' and rather thin sounding. But when I stand slightly away (maybe moving to the right of the speaker), I noticed that the sound gets a bit 'warmer' with less treble.
Is this normal about the uniformity of the speaker sound?
I've tried the bigger ones ...Lanel lv300 ....it sounds good when u stand at a certain position but not when u're in front of the amp.

Any of u facing the same problem? I've tried Carvin Legacy and Marshall...the sound are quite uniform.

Maybe Randolf can explain this ? or Subversion?

Try using something to put directly infront of the dome of the speaker.

Like what BB king does. He uses a wad of newspaper to deflect the trebles coming straight out of the cone. You can make a temporary one with a small stand and some newspaper rolled into a ball and taped using duct tape.

Thanx, bro. May I know where I can get more info on BB's method u mentioned above. I did google it but only came out wif the type of amp he's using...Lab System. A Discontinued Gibson amp I think

Hey Union,

very good question! ok i'll try.... :)

what you'r experiencing is a common case of sound projection/dispersion phenomenon. the full technical explanation will lead you to pschoacoustics engineering dept. if you wish to pursue in dept that is. :) i'll try to explain it in a simple and practical way which hopefully will be of much use to help you n others understand and resolve this your way...along the way.

Sounds sound different depending on where it's heard from depending on many things including the source of the sound, the materials and dimension of sound box surrounding the sound source, the proximity of the entire sound source from the floor and the walls, the materials of the walls and floor and also the sound reflective nature of everything from the sound box design to the walls and floor and lastly the position of the ear or mic that's listening or recording the sound. i think from the above simplistic description of a typical listening environment you can quickly arrive at understanding that unless you place ur ears right in front of the sound source the human ear doesn't just hear sound from the "speaker" but also hears a combination of the direct sound from the speakers indirectly reflected off the floor and walls surround the speaker cabinet.

if your combo amp has an open back design it will also sound different from closed back designs as the sound dispersed from behind will also add to the "openess" airy, surround like but less tight bass compared to closed backs which have a more defined low end. You will also notice that smaller combo amps with smaller speakers tend to have a smaller accurate sound projection angle compared to larger amps.

ur combo amp with the same settings will sound very drastically different (in both good and not so good ways depending on wat suits you) if it were plugged into a 1x12, 2x12 and 4x12 open or closed back.

hope this has been helpful! :)

Season's greeting evry'One!

Dooode ...your Laney is a Solid State amp with a one preamp tube ....how to compare with a real full tube amp ???!!

Your amp is loaded with 1x12" Celestion Super 65 = "Another notch up the power scale, the Super 65 has a tight low-end, a finely detailed mid-range with a hint of grit, and an extended and revealing top-end."

Now you know...

Hmm.... now I saw dat bold description ' ..an extended and revealing top end '....it's a characteristic of Super 65 speakers!
Problem solved...hehehe. But honestly , bro. The Laney lv300 with head and cab has got the same problem. That's what I felt when I tried it out Ebenex's jamming studio some time ago.

I've tried Marshall Vintage Modern 50W combo at Blackwood...dat one is a different beast.
