Songs Meaning

to me, i always think that a set of lyrics can have many meanings and perspectives. it's up to the listener or reader to think and decide what it's all about. for example one person might think of it as this meaning while the other might think of it as the other.

Creep deep? you must have limited listening.

well to thom yorke, it must have had quite some meaning for him to write a song like that. also there's this funny little thing called an opinion, let him have it.

words, for the lack of understanding order and seeking solace among the uncharted area, within our mind and sight.

i like how the media like to listen to tracks backwards and then make a big hooha and say that "so-and-so bands are satanic. listen to this!" then plays the backmasked message.

somehow, i always find metal lyrics the one with the most hidden meaning.
some to an extent are very poetic. ( sonata arctica etc)

but i really dislike songs that are made with the main intention of making money.
haha.
to me it's meaningless

"And when this hourglass has filtered out its final grain of sand, i raise my glass to the memories we had"

lyrics from So Long Astoria by The Ataris.. I have always been amazed how they write their stuff.. Subtle yet straightforward..

dont forget some songs have very very hidden meanings!

"its fun to smoke marijauna!"
a song like......

Puff The Magic Dragon - by Peter, Paul and Mary

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh

Btw, "Honahlee" is a town in Hawaii known for marijuana use.

I Am The Walrus & Hey Jude by the Beatles are another.

Marijuana or not, most interpretations differ and are very subjective. Some songs just have no meaning altogether. For example, I can't make it what John Lennon meant by this in "I am the Walrus":

I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus,
Coo coo kachoo ka coo coo kachoo.
Juba juba juba, juba, juba, juba, juba, juba, juba juba. Juba juba.....

:D

I was just about to mention songmeaning.net, haha.

It's good to know what the lyrics are, but mostly I first fall in love with the song itself. And if it interests me enough, I'd take the extra effort to find out what the lyrics are.

The lyrics are also a manifestation of the writer's perspective. All of them have their views, some born of personal tragedy, political turmoil, etc.

ah i'm like that too. lyrics are secondary. hahaha

for me lyrics are secondary if i know the song is of bad content. example.. hells bells of ac/dc. i freaking love that song but i know the lyrics are something i dont like. so i simply just turn off brian johnson and listen to the music

Yeah for the most part I listen mainly to the music rather than the lyrics, unless it's bands like Pavement or singer-songwriters like Ani Difranco where the vocals and lyrics are more prominent.

I think the most cryptic lyrics I heard is from At the Drive-in/Mars Volta. Great music , but can forget about deciphering the lyrics.

Sample from ATDI:
And the paramedics fell into the wound
Like a rehired scab at a barehanded plant,
An anesthetic penance beneath
The hail of contraband.

i used to say to my friends i listen to music for their lyrics and meaning....
but can't say that anymore....
the chorus in recent music is bloody catchy....especially those mainstream stuff...(insert any rapper/boybands/pop stuff here}
