Saw the vid, but I really do appreciate the 'Benny Greb' clip more, the one that Funkifized posted. (No offence slapshock)

Was expecting a bit more from Yoshiki after reading so much about him on this forum.

uhm. Solo sounded okay. just that at some parts I felt he was almost 'anyhow' whacking because there didn't seem to be any rhythm. stage antics...*heh* very interesting...
is it? the rhythm and everything was all there what...

i dunno... i feel that since there was no other musical instruments it sounded perfectly fine for him to change the tempo at certain parts of the solo...

i think the solo was great... but not one of the best

instead of u guys saying: "chey... i've heard much better..." why not try: "i've heard many many many many many many drum solos which were much much worst..."

maybe that'd like, make u look not so stuck up...

The problem being that there are little media of him, and its not easy finding videos of his drumming. But there is, however, plenty of talk and discussion about Yoshiki. Thanks to slapshock here, we are finally able to view one of Yoshiki's drum solo.

Naturally, we would judge him based on what we saw off the video. It may not be his best work, but it does say a lot about him as a drummer. You're right, I've seen worse drum solos. But in terms of Yoshiki as a drummer, I can say that I'm disappointed by his mediocrity.

Infact, for someone with such a horrible sense of ergonomics in his setup, and for the blatant lack of technicality and musicality in his solo, I can barely see any reason for anyone to find that solo to be "great" or "good". Isn't that just fanboyism at its best?

He's just the Asian Joey Jordison. You'll outgrow him sooner or later only to find that there are indeed better drummers out there. So instead of judging him based on how he wears that orgasm-face while hitting away on his triggered bass drums, why not listen to him, then listen to some of the drumming greats, THEN make a post about it.

Maybe it will like, you know, make you seem less ignorant.

yes... i listened to the whole song without watching the vid... i'm not a fan of the visuals from visual rock thats y...

imho, his unique set up of drums is really his preference... i mean if he can play it well on this setup... well he should go ahead and use it

well, the changes of tempo was very interesting... very unique sense of music... its almost classical

But considering he pickup himself, being self-thought, and being a composer and a pianist, its consider good already.

Like i told before, never compare him with Drummer out there, like somebody posted he is more suit to call a musician or pianist? Thats why i find his drumming consider great already.

If people like Akira Jimbo, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy plays like that, of coz i will call that mediocre too. He doesnt touring around the world doing drum clinics, or make a drum videos and bla bla bla.

Aiyah i dont know how too describe ah, hope you understand what i mean. Not i want to say he's damn good or what, but as a composer and a pianist, to play like that is consider good already. Just like as a guitarist to play a classical piece on piano is consider good already, something like that ah.

for e.g what would u say if Malmsteen or Michael Angelo plays drums like Lars Ulrich? Arent that good enough? Is it fair to compare it to Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart or Steve Gadd or Dave Weckl drumming?

Thats why i say, must consider other thing first before comparing...

once again i said, never i did mention in any of my post that yoshiki is the best, yes he's mediocre comparing to the drummer out there which i think comparing them would be unfair.

Infact, for someone with such a horrible sense of ergonomics in his setup, and for the blatant lack of technicality and musicality in his solo, I can barely see any reason for anyone to find that solo to be "great" or "good". Isn't that just fanboyism at its best?

Drum setups must suit the music he playing lah, what you expect? Setup like what? Dave Weckl or Terry Bozio for e.g? Why would he need that? Why would Travis need Mike Portnoy setup while he just playing punk rock? Why would a punk rock need a setup like that? And Yoshiki drum setup suits the music he's playing mah, does drum setup got anything to do with a persons drumming? Im sorry if i get your statement wrong.

Oklah, for me Yoshiki is good, fanboyism?

Oh My God! Download this drum solo! Its the best in the world! The fastest on earth, And whats more? He's so cute~ No other drummer as cute as him, look at Yoshiki's hair, so smooth, look at his sexy body, so lean, look at his face so clean~ Download it guys! No other drummer as handsome and good as him

Ok you can call me yoshiki fanboy now.

heh guys stop flaming one another
this is suppose to be a forum to share , if u dun like yoshiki just keep quiet k?

if u all think he is lousy or mediocre, den u all can try playing wat he plays ba.. if u can record a solo and upload it for us to watch maybe...

pls if u cant do any of that SHUT UP!!...

pls i pity those who dun understand x japan and yoshiki's efforts in music.... too bad for those who cant understand or dun like...

u all as mature musicians should learn to repect all other genres or styles, and try to learn more about them not just flame flame flame...

i am disappointed that sg has such narrow minded people....musicians somemore...

to slapshock... thanks for sharing the vid.. didnt hav that vid...

relaaax, I don't think they are criticising his general talent in music, but rather, his drumming skills, which admittedly are not spectacular.
and if you can't look beyond yoshiki, then you're the narrow-minded one.

of cos i look beyond yoshiki... its just he happens to be my fav

we all hav favs dun we... wat mike portney and all those guys u all like...

for me i dun like solos too complex or fast...like so fast go drive a car or wat...

to quote you, there's also something to be learnt from all these fast fast 'drive car' solos you know?

of cos... i do learn from them too... i watch solos like them too... of cos i am impressed by all those inhumane speeds... like watching the olympics 100 m srprint... but i dun feel anything much emotionally...

learn abit from everything and make ur own style... i like yoshiki's style watever u all might say... maybe he is not popuplar among drummers ... bcos they think hes lousy? altho i think hes fine .... not excpetional... but gd enough to play for is songs and not many ppl would try to imitate wat he does... maybe they can play the same beats , but i m sure they will neva sound the same as his... bcos he plays for his own songs he knows best...

dun attack wat i say , say something in relation to the vid or durmming... thanks

Well, yosh, you're right. This is a forum, a place for discussion. I'm sure whatever points we've raised here aren't just unfounded judgements and assumptions. This is a healthy discussion and it seems like the only one who's taking it so defensively would be you, yosh.

I am sure Yoshiki is a talented musician and composer, but I've not seen enough to judge. I simply said whatever I mentioned solely based on his skills as a drummer. Also, I believe it's only fair to make comparisons between his drum solo and other drummer's drum solo. As for how much of an accomplished multi-instrumentalist he is, I can't say much about it. Simply put, I am not down playing Yoshiki's abilities as a musician, I merely stated that I was disappointed by Yoshiki's abilities as a drummer.

And regarding his setup. It isn't just his setup per se. It's HOW his drums are being setup. Just look at those angles! Damned 80s hair metal styled deep toms.
I don't see how a setup like that can be comfortable. I know, personal preference. But really, that snare angle is retarded.

okok den .. i was defensive.. as a x japan fan had to be..

maybe we shd really stop talking about yoshiki on the drum forums...

i feel he isnt that welcomed here ... also i realise u all dun talk about any japanese drummer much here.. is it bcos u all are exposed more to english music?

or are japanese lousier? ( well dun asians shd hav more nimble hands , u know like games like ping pong and badminton we always win the and mohs? )

or u all hate japanese for occupying singapore for 3 yrs..

or u all hate sushi?

or u all hate that they hav porcelain smooth skin?

haha .. opinions?

True enough, Vaiyen, this seems to be going nowhere. So lets all take turns to post pictures of hot japanese chicks. You go first, yosh.
