SOFT Meeting on Mobile DAWs

I totally agree with the casual meetup + live demo. I'd definitely be there man. :D
(Youtube tutorials will be a bonus.)

Everything on the meet up can be recorded on video and put on youtube. Then we can easily build on what was covered in future sessions. People who can't come can just go to youtube and watch the sessions.

Ok. Let's start building up a list of things that people would like to be covered. The list can be long. Not everything need to be on the first session. We just need to prioritize and choose from the list to be covered. It shouldn't be didactic (one person talking all the time). Do it participatory.

We should also make things minimalistic. No point setting up with 20 mics with 40 tracks digital mixer and other high end gear. That's because people who own 20 mics and a 40 tracks digital mixer won't be attending these sessions (they don't need to - they are already pros!). It's not a time to show off, but really make it very practical for the average Jane and Joe. Something that a hobbyist can do with limited/minimal budget and gear. Something like this will be very useful and applicable - and I anticipate high youtube hits as well, considering the target audience it's hitting.

hmm interesting, so we'll have both YouTube/SOFT thread tutorials compiled by SOFTies, and additional video footage of live SOFT meetups demonstrations on youtube.

we won't use up until 20 mics really. I only have 7 drum mics (Left Overhead,Right Overhead,Snare,Kick,Tom,Tom,Tom), XLR cables, 2 mic stands (the rest are on clamps/mounts) , my audio interface and laptop. like I said it's not going to be simulating a proper location recording for the average user because we're talking about the combined weight of maybe... 20 kg? I donno. I'm 6 feet and 100kg and I've been lugging this around for years up and down the stairs. (some jamming studios are on the 3rd floor!) and because I did house-visit-computer-technician when I was alot younger there're techniques to carrying heavy load (heavy non aluminium CPUs one hand, CRT MONITOR with the other!) with minimal strength + risk to hurt yourself, which is how I integrated into my recording eventually.. so it's more for people in the "bedroom" drum recording.

I can start to see this thing taking shape. I can start the ball rolling.. but not anytime soon cos I need to finish up the current commitments... most likely for early 2011

Is drum recording the thing we want to do? What is the most common recording situation?

Most likely this will take place in 2011. We are near year's end and we need to get logistics set up. I'm only back in Singapore in end Jan till end Feb. I'm just starting off this thread. Somebody may have to take over and coordinate.

But yes, let's get the ball rolling. My area is in live performance using mobile DAW (VST etc). Recording is out of my league.

Drum Recording is just one of the many, because in drums one may choose to rely on MIDI programming or an E-drumset > midi to usb > and record in MIDI form to skip all the multi microphone hoohahs. that one will probably cater to guys with drumset in their bedrooms and wanna do own recording etc. or those new audio students that are still trying to figure out the whole drums recording thingy cos it's already complicated to use 1 microphone let alone 7 onwards.

eventually the guitar/bass/vocals will be much more straight forward in a sense because there're lesser "inputs" used.

since you got limited time frame, you could run the live performance mobile DAW one first see how it works out, I'm very sure james can get us a location etc. we just need to help ourselves with the programme.

Oh, don't worry about me. The key is what will SOFTies want. And I think mobile recording (according to the responses from this thread) seems the more important area to cover.

One helpful thing is troubleshooting in a live situation. In the middle of the demo, we can stage/engineer some kind of problem/breakdown (what is the most commonly faced situation?). Then demo on the spot how to troubleshoot and solve the situation with minimal time and damage.

Erhm... I have a home studio with drums (mic'ed up) and PA. I don't mind letting you guys use it for the demo/video recording.

If need any venue/logistic help, just let me know. So fun to have meetups like these.

Suddenly, I have a thought that the workshop should conduct in the Chocolate Love @ Tanglin CC. We will be learning and drinking.:p

Cheez, I'm happy you started this thread and all but that display pic of yours is harmful... I rolled up my magazine and smacked my monitor...
