it's a fender J bass copy.

the first thing i noticed when i picked it up was the awful chunky neck! I'm not talking about the width, but the back of the neck, it's protruding out too much and I really dislike it.

I think I'm too used to my yamaha bb414 where the neck is very thin and the back of the neck is thin and flat as well. I'm wondering if the Ibanez SR series is think like that as well?

But after picking up the SX bass i get the feeling I immediately want to put it down... i guess the neck is just not suitable for me.

Hmmm, why not try it out yourself? Then see what you like best.

if you go to a shop to try then ok.... but if you ordering from oversaeas.... cannot try :(

anyways, even so, what if the model you looking for ain't avail in sg shops.... then becomes very difficult to try.

but yes, i agree, the best way is to try it out yourself. the problem is in SG not all models are available and that makes the best way a little impossible to achieve.

the fender/squire jazz neck is thinner then the SX jazz copy.
i would say get the package. the tone is VERY good for that price.
change the neck (might need some shimming) and you get something extremely similar to a fender.

Many bassists buy SXes to modify the heck out of them. Change neck(optional if I'm not wrong), pick ups, bridge, electronics. Top it up with a good set up and you get one amazing bass. Even though you can't really call it an SX anymore.

Maybe you could do something similar.

there are many other j-type copies in the market, we should make some comparisons before deciding, especially for products in this price bracket 8-)

be sure to try:

*Samick Fairlane
*Timbre J-copy

he he... that's too much credit. i believe in putting forth the good stuff but the onus is still on you to try them out, we have our personal preferences, what i propose may be poisonous to you especially after trying them out.

for those of us looking for basses in this price bracket, the myriad copies out there sporting the J-outline do NOT conform to Fender's J profile, especially the neck- please note.

This is pretty sweet.

you can try the stagg basses at zen guitarwerks also. their lespaul copies are not bad for the price

not sure about the basses though

stagg basses are really cheap for the tone you get out of them. Try the jazz basses there. They sound really good and they're nice to play too.

i think other than the tone, what matters (at least to me) is how comfortable the neck is.

like I mentioned in my posts, the SX neck profile gave me a strong reaction to say "YUCKS!" and want to put it down immediately.

so it's down to individual preference...

i used to despise neck profiles, eg: ibanez = good, gibson = bad but this serves to only limit my capacity. if you can play guitar/ bass, you can play any guitar/ bass that comes your way. of course, you play better with the ones you are accustomed to, it's about your quirks after all.
