Small Tube amps to recommend..

I dun really wan something as small as 15 watt actually.. Slightly bigger 25-30 watt.. something for home use.. currently Vox Night train will be a prority.. but cabinet got any other choice? something not from vox..

After all these while, don't you realise that you need to crank your amp to get that nice overdrive sound from tube amps? And don't you realise yet that 15watts are much too loud for home use? And you want 25-30 watts? Please state your reasons...

Oh whatever, you can refer here for watts:volume comparison.

Agreed. Even the teeny weeny 5W Valbee can reach window shaking volumes. Tube amps are much much louder than SS amps.

my 1W Killer Ant can rattle windows, no problems...

Its hard to compare the vox and blackheart cuz they are 2 dif amps for dif purposes. I would like to hear the vox break up agst the blackheart.

On the other hand, tube are not louder than SS amps, its a perceived loudness because the tube amps have dif frequencies that reach ur ears "faster" or rather its more pronounced than SS amps. So ur ears tell u they are louder.

yup 5 watts are still very loud!!!

i have this Swart Space Tone 5W. amazing Champ Clone... great with my strat... stays clean due to the pickups... but when i drive my Les Paul into it... the breakup is shwweeettt.... just about waking up my neighbours....

;O

I'm feeling a bit of regret after some recent threads;
Why had i hesitated to get the AC4TV during the CM sale!

Reason very clear.. Cuz I can tan han the loudness.. and I will be putting in my room.. so won't really affect my neighbour.. to be honest.. I play quite loud.. but 25~30 watt is really loud until so terrible..

Oh really?

Don't mind my lazyness, but what is your current amp? Have you tried turning it at full gain and volume?

This contradicts your earlier post on page 4 where you state that 15 watts are too 'small' for you. And that you want something 25-30 watts.

Now you state 25-30 watt is too much for you. So what exactly do you want?

Tube amps are not only more towards the expensive side, but are also difficult to maintain. Changing of tubes is unavoidable and troublesome to put. If done incorrectly you could risk yourself. Moreover most tube amps really shine when cranked. Unless your home is sound proof and you can crank it up i dont think your tube amp will be maximised.

The others have already recommended stuff like the vox ac4/night train etc. As to whether you can play with other cabs or not the answer is Yes. All you need to do is use the google function.
Subversions picture already shows the answer.

Thank so much.. Finally understand what going on..
So conlusion is 15 watt is already out of point for tube amps..
So I will get a 15 watt.. supposing vox night train or anything is SV.. We test it when I have time..

and I suppose I got people to help me.. I know a bunch of musician actually..

For Cabs.. Any good recommendation?

been following this thread since im a small tube amp owner myself (own a fewfrom 1 watt to 10 watt, and they rattle my windows at smal vol.).. no offend to the thread starter here, but i think you should really find out more on differences between tube amps and S/S amps...its more than the wattage, how loud etc...

and maybe you just need to phase what you are saying more clearly(refer to your quote)

"15 watt is already out of point for tube amps..."
"so i will get a 15 watt..."

meaning?? and yes, its good that you have a bunch of musician friends who can help you out there.

its not just the wattage, there are good and bad sounding low wattage tube amps
similarly, there are also good and bad sounding high wattage tube amps.
and the same for solid state or hybrid etc etc amps.

If you like the one at your friends place, you should consider getting the same thing :)
so chances of you landing with a amp that you like is higher.

Alternatively, go try all amps available and choose.
don't pay too much attention to the specs, cause they will just confuse you.

i think some things needs to be clarified again, ie 25-30w is not alot louder than 5w. In fact, 15w is also not alot softer than 100w. Wattage doesnt tell u much about volume, but head room (How clean your amp can sound until they break up).

On the notion that u have to crank ur tube amp than it sounds gd, its also not necessarily true. Some amps are built to stay clean no matter how u crank them, the some ppl dislike how the ac30 break up for example (The are a few different ac30 models), and of course ur marshalls which sounds crappy until u crank the 100w monsters till the dirt comes through (This would be too loud even to play in a small club venue). So its all about what the amps are made to do. You do not have to crank them at 80% then it will sound nice, u just need a gd amount of signal to be fed and the power tubes to be working hot enough. Of course, if u can play louder by all means. Also, i find that at higher volume, ur eq is going to react n sound differently as well.

The magic is actually in the cone imo, u need to play at a level where the cones open up and come alive, when too soft its like muffled and as tho there is a blanket over it. So whether tube or not, u need to understand that about cones.

If u are getting a head and cab combo, then seriously look at the speakers combination with ur amp. Thats gg to make more dif than changing ur tube to a certain brand from stock ...etc.

Honestly, i owned a few tube amps alr and i dont find that the maintenance is higher in anyway. Tubes are more solid than u think and can last a gd deal. Most of the cost comes from us having itchy backside n keep changing tubes to try get better tone.

Some of us are using 100w amps with 1/2 stack & theres no problem. (Im using a 2x12).

So its entirely up to you whether what you want. If you want those thumping tones like you seen in concerts or DVDs, get a 1/2 stack. If not, 1x12 or 2x12 is enough for you.
