Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel) has won the rights to air Barclays English Premier League matches across its platforms, as well as exclusive broadcast rights to ESPN STAR Sports for mio TV.

In a statement released on Thursday, SingTel said the rights would allow it to broadcast EPL matches on mio TV, the Internet and mobile applications for three years starting August next year.

Asia's leading telecommunications company said it has also secured rights to a suite of sports networks and services from ESPN STAR Sports for its mio TV customers.

This means it will have the rights to show programme offerings under ESPN, which include the FA Cup, Formula One, the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open Golf Championship.

A new 24-hour sports news channel, called ESPNEWS, is also slated for broadcast on mio TV from next month.

SingTel said other exclusive sports services will be unveiled soon.

SingTel Singapore CEO Allen Liew assured viewers that charges will be comparable to what sports fans are currently paying to their cable TV operator.

Is this good or bad news???

This is the worst possible news for all football fans who have subscribed to Starhub's Sports Channel.

This is depressing news.
:(

I wonder how long more till my contract expires from starhub....
For those who just signed up or renewed their contract recently, it would mean a bigger blow to them.
2 boxes! if you want your football!

have to make the switch if i want my doze of weekend football...
I just hope the price is reasonable.

Even if Starhub reduce their prices, who is gonna want to sign up now?

Yeah, guess all of us die-hard BPL fans will have to make the switch and jump ship.

so will starhub reduce their sports group subscription prices????

They have not made an announcement yet. But logically, i don't see why they should keep the prices the same after losing the BPL. majority of the sports group subscribers watch the BPL. some even subscribe just to watch the BPL.

I think even the coffe shops and pubs that broadcast the BPL will be affected too.

Whatever it is, Starhub stands to lose the most at the end of the day.

Sad lah for them.

I wonder what their next step will be.

Yeah, man. Rumour has it that SingTel has also won the rights to air the 2010World Cup.

Toldja SingTel winning rights to air BPL was depressing.

Coz it leads to even more depressing revelations.
:(

what mio have on their channel?
if they got discovery, nat geo, animax , axn & beyond than can consider jump to those morons if not than no point.
just watch those jerky stream on the net is fine :(.
now starhub cannot charge alot for sports channel already. heck they should just give it free for their subscribers before they lose majority of them!

maybe losing their ace will wake up starhub cos their tv subs have nothing good to offer. been 3 yrs out of contract with them waiting for some good goodies from them but ...

This is dumb. I'm actually very upset.
I can't swap to Mio cos 1) They have horrible programs. 2) My little brother wants his Nick and Cartoon Network.

And I need my weekly football. :(
I won't switch.

Damn, actually its already 2-0 to Singtel. They have the rights to both the BPL and the Champions League.

Oh yah, i agree with faizal, the customer loses out the most when this sort of stuff happens
