Should i get a RG or Strat?

but when it comes to hendrix , its a different story altogether, like what junkiemanxl said, i missed out on the twang and quack of the single coils, which is very evident especially since i practice while playign along with the song on mp3 linked to my amp.
even my gf whos a layman can tell the difference, shes my biggest tone critic :P

Ah ok ok... I missed this bit. Yes, the strat will give you that single coil bits. But having said that, it doesn't mean the strat is built for shredding. It was built for country music. Honestly!

And the strat and RG are both different. An RG will not give you that hendrix feel. a strat will not give you that Vai feel.

In this case, I'd recommend a SSH guitar. SSH strats can be fine. Make sire the fretboard radius is at least 9.5", and you have 22 frets.

try shredding on a 324 neck and on small medium vintage frets like me...and you'll know how difficult it is...

And this is coming from a player who used to be from the ibanez camp. Ibanezes arent exactly very toneful guitars in terms of their construction.

reckon i shd get a strat cos im a real man lol...
althou the RG appeals to me more as a thrashing guitar :D

actually can just head down to guitar connection to try cos they have both RGs and strats there. gathering input here is good but trying them side by side is better. budget wise, RGs are generally more affordable imo.

Coming from some of you guys saying "Only men play strats" or "Ibanezes arent exactly very toneful guitars in terms of their construction.", it is funny that people like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman,Andy Timmons have been playing Ibanez Guitars their entire career.

Wonder if people making such comments have even cut a record deal before or atleast sell just a million albums yet.

Need to be very careful here..

First of all, they are not men. Secondly they pick NOT very toneful guitars :) Listen their albums, there are no guitar "tones".

Yes, I agree that those guys mentioned aren't Men. They're not even human. But did you know that Joe Satriani DELIBERATELY chose a toneless guitar? I specified to Ibanez in the beginning he wanted something acoustically DEAD. Yet for some reason, his latest album has such a killer tone, it's making me want to buy a JS.

The other reasons you didn't mention have to do with $$$.

But it's not true that Ibanez guitars aren't very toneful. That's a little too generalising, I think.

Aiyah... a guitar is a guitar lah... 6 strings or 7, they're all the same. Can play means can play. Cannot play means cannot play, regardless of how expensive or toneful your guitar is.

P.S. "Real Men Play Strats" did not come from me. It's not local either. It came from generations of strat wielding ang mohs who think nothing much of Vai and his guys because they dig people like Howard Roberts, Robin Trower, Stevie Ray, Peter Green, Leslie West etc etc...

And the strat only affliction thing? It came from Jimi Hendrix. (go read Stratocaster Chronicles by Tom Wheeler).

Dude i love Ibanez guitars man....I'm getting a S5470 myself.....And being a big fan of Dragonforce's Herman Li I even had an S470.

its just that i find it much more challenging playing stuff on a strat than an Ibanez....and somehow some ppl's preferences lean towards other things ... you can ask anyone here who used to be from the ibanez camp, e.g Shredcow, Whitestrat and more. There are some artistes too who realised that there is more to it than just playability, ak John Petrucci who switched to an EBMM, and Andy Timmons fyi has dropped his endorsement deal with Ibanez....he dosent want to be limited to be just playing their guitars....

About the comment i made about tone, its my personal opinion. No generalisations here. Honestly tone is in the fingers too, I can pick up any guitar and I'll still sound good, although i know that I'll be the most comfortable with my strat. If you like an Ibanez guitar, go get one by all means.....I'd like an Ibanez too but i wouldnt want to be restricted to playing only Ibanez guitars cos my tonal preferences and appetite demands for more.

Damn ok....i must really try one then!!!

I bet it sounds better than the JPM right??

It's... different. I remember the JPM to be a bit brighter and tighter. This one... The neck pickup, is different. It's still similar to the air norton, but it's got a bit more transparency, and sounds bigger than the norton used to. It's nice... The D Sonic is something I never liked, so I threw a Steve's Special into my JP6. Even then, it's a little different. Somehow (maybe because of the difference in trem, piezo, and non-locking nut) the tone for the JP6 is a bit bigger and not as tight. I wish I had a chance to try the pre-D Sonic bridge pup.

The JPM I used to have can't be compared, because that was a 90th anniversary model with ebony fretboard, and maple top. Sounded completely different. Very bright, which I liked.

ok now that i've finally gotten my 2nd guitar which is a MIM fender strat.
i thought its ok if i revisit this thread? :o
hope u guys dun mind me sharing my noobish thoughts

first the playing part:
didnt took me very long to get use to it, the fretting part is effortless
and probably to me , i feel much more flexible on a strat than on my LP
could be the neck is thinner? it does sure feels that way. jus tat perhaps the fret scaling is abit diff.

volume swell is so much easier :p
and a tremolo arm works wonders too... esp when i play "cause we ended as lovers"
(no dive bombing thou :P)

sound wise:
love the twang n quack on a strat, its a totally different beast to my lespaul which has active pickups. its perfect for some of the more mellow stuff i play. thou i feel the pickups could stil be better, i dunno how to put it, lacks abit of bite and sustain for me stil even if i expect it to be different from my Lespaul. not a big issue for now thou i forsee i might need to swap pickups in time to come, but thats another story for another time :)

and im glad i dun sound terrible on a strat! whew... finally able to put that ghost to rest.

theres one thing i dun understand thou, after playing my strat for hours.
i pick up my lp n play, and to my suprise i m stil able to play my lp
and smoother too! is it jus a pscyhological effect or some kinda natural reaction?

but i do notice i play differently on these 2 guitars, pretty loose n flexible n effortless on strat but much tighter on my lespaul.

hope u guys dun mind me diggin old thread :o
cheers
