When i write songs, i always tend to look in terms of these two categories, musician's song or singer's songs.
Musician's songs are those that appeal to musicians like us and people who have reach a higher understand of musicality, it normally won't sell out as well, but the rewards are self-actualisation, respect from musicians and your name might appeal in music books.
Singer's songs are those that appeal to the common crowd, they normally are made with melodies that people can really sing to, and the rewards for these are fame and money. Still, you probably won't see Britney Spear's name in music educational books, i seriously won't bother to read her articles hoping to learn anything... unless there are pictures about how she carry her boobs....

its sometimes kinda contradictory when the public is more willing to accept people with talent more than with looks..to me....both TALENT and LOOKS are born with..not earned/trained...so why criticise those with looks but no talent? ..can we criticise those with talent with no looks as much?

so what if u've the talent? did u work ur ass off to get to where u are? how much effort did u put in?..now that is the difference...

potential/talent , good looks etc are genetic and yes something we are born with.

but Talent goes deeper then superficial looks.
looks will fade with time , talent grows with time.

its much better for a musician to have talent and no good looks then to have looks and no talent.

but good looks get you the money.

of all e contestants i think olinda is the only one with raw and real talent

sylvester has zero stage presence ( no confidence : just look at e way his eyes dart when gurmit singh puts his arm around him ) . apparently sylvester has his own J-rock band somewhere in singapore ...

lets face it. people are shallow enuf to worship those flashy flashy people with bling bling and star glamour with ABSOLUTELY ZERO substance.

Yeah basically i watch Singapore Idol because Olinda is still in it. The only time i liked Sylvester was when he sang the aerosmith song.

But he sang offkey the entire song! :?

The singapore idol is not for me actually...i dont think i will idolise any of the participants...however i find Daphne appealing, coz she is young, got a fair looks and can sing...perfect for this kind of events...

They are targeting younger generation i think...not meant for me..
if im the judge i`ll go for a natural singer/entertainer...oh well

Btw the IDol thingy comsume lots of time and money, i think its mentally drained as well...

to me..they are music...different types of music requires different instruments to bring the best outta it. Some fantastic singing songs dosent translate well to instrument and vice versa... it depends on the song

singers dosent mean lesser musicians..that depends on which kinda singers...in the case of Britney Spears..para74's views holds true..others like classically trained singers or jazz vocalist(ella fitzerald) are just as good as any..

i found it bearable, cos it's the only song that doesnt make me cringe. but then i don't think he can sing. so i don't wish to defend him beyond this. :roll:

i believe that expressing music, whether thru vocals or instruments or both requires TALENT. No talent, how good a song oso wun sound nice. No talent, how good a musical piece play already oso wun sound nice la.

And yes sweet child o'mine is one hell of a solo.. but its really no big deal because anyone who has played the guitar for time will be able to do it. And besides ur playing sweet child o'mine to bunch of pple who fascinates boybands? lol. In this local music scene, it isnt about wad u want ,nor is its about showing off, its about wad the pple want.Sad but true. If u dont sell out, u cant sell ur cds. I hope ya learnt ur lesson. I learnt mine the hardway too.

Ahh, but there's a difference.

if you play in order to appeal to masses, you're considered a performing artiste, entertainer, performer.

If you compose your own songs, instead of singing what others had composed for you, play your own instruments, having real substance, people would naturally call you a musician, talent.

That's why people never label Britney Spears, boyzone, madonna, michael jackson as musicians. They're always referred to as artistes.

It's a no brainer to know which one requires more effort and is better respected.

Just my own 2 cents.
