When i write songs, i always tend to look in terms of these two categories, musician's song or singer's songs.
Musician's songs are those that appeal to musicians like us and people who have reach a higher understand of musicality, it normally won't sell out as well, but the rewards are self-actualisation, respect from musicians and your name might appeal in music books.
Singer's songs are those that appeal to the common crowd, they normally are made with melodies that people can really sing to, and the rewards for these are fame and money. Still, you probably won't see Britney Spear's name in music educational books, i seriously won't bother to read her articles hoping to learn anything... unless there are pictures about how she carry her boobs....
