I don't really understand chords and score sheet.

But recently I've gotten a guitar song book with some score sheets that shows musical notations of the melody/vocals of a song with chord names written above the bars.

Can someone tell me what's the purpose of the chords written? I'd show an example, but my scanner spoil :/

The notes, I think would be the actual notes written for the song. That is the melody of the song playable for the part of guitar. The chords are a reference for you to play when you play the song. If you're not playing the melody line, it helps you play the correct chords for that backing section.

Get yourself a guitar based music teacher.

I have a guitar teacher (electric guitar), but we don't go through music notation and currently not into chords. Sadly most of the music sheet that I want to attempt comes as music score or chords =_=
