Hie guys.
Anyone here is a current student or former student of SAE. Need to know how worth it is the course etc...how good etc..everything abt ur life there.
i've decided to go there but juz wanna know other people experience. thankz.

Depending what you want to get out from the education. Alot of things you can learn by "on-the-job training. The thing about going to a school is that you will be forced to learn the theory behind why certain things are done in such a way or what are some of the technology behind certain things.

It will be good if you have some prior knowledge in the audio engineering field. Maybe sound crew for gigs or stage hands. Or you have tried doing home recording for 1 year. All these will help you find out what is the thing you want to learn more.

For me, I was doing sequencing with midi and minus-one music. So, the course was an eye-opener for me with regards to what they do in a 'real' recording studio.

With the SAE education, I got into SAF Music and Drama Company as a soundman for my NS and got my first job as audio producer in a video company. Hee.hee.. i guess i was lucky.

I went in with absolutely zero experience. Didn't do very well, but definitely taught me alot of things.

9k for 1 year course...if you have the cash to burn, go for it. Otherwise, spend the 9k on gear and learn yourself.

Also, you need contacts eg bands. Otherwise who are you going to record?

hi james, got a question for you. Is SAE cert recognized overseas?... I wana go into music productions & engineering as well as composition, do you reccomend that i go SAE then go somewhere else for music?.. Or should i join la-selle's music tech course, thx alot...

although im into music too, but my main concern is music productions and engineering, im not interested in music appreciation n classical stuff offered by NUS or NAFA. I am currently taking up private classical lessons and i have been playing the piano for around 7+ years liao.. I am taking my classical lessons hah, intend to at least get grade 8 for both practical and theory. Now i wana focus more on the production and engineering side.. Berklee music college in boston looks like a good choice for me, however its very expensive and i don't think i will be able to afford it, what other alternative paths are available for me?.. If i go berklee, i would be taking up dual majors - Music production&enginering as well as composition..

the reason why i went to sae was because they have gears that i can't afford. (the first few batch of students were using Neve VR!!!)

the thing i find about audio engineering is that we have to keep comparing. Mic A vs Mic B. Position A vs Position B. Pre-amp A vs Pre-amp B. Speaker A vs Speaker B ..... it will be good if the school have alll these for you to play with.

Since you have already got the music track covered, i suggest you get a decent DAW and start recording and mixing.

crazy

Hey Tera,
Double majors? Wah biang. I have a friend who went there to study guitar, he couldnt cope with it boy. And now you wanna do double......foooo both takes away a lot of time man. You might wanna reconsider.

Audio engineering

I never went to SAE, i have been learning on my own. At the end of the day. all engineers have learnt one important thing.

Whatever works lor. Sounds good to you? Ok lets rock.

Hee :P

well guys...my situation is such that i have only my gce 'o' level cert now...not doin well in my current A level course n tot of dropping out to go to SAE...i need atleast a diploma if not i have nothing..juz O level..how to survive..anyway...some people told me to go poly...more secure as in government body etc...but 3 yrs is a long time for me man...after doin 2 yrs in my current school...i will be real old when i enter poly...
so i was thinking of SAE...then go oversea etc etc...juz wanna know more abt SAE n the things u guys do there...
thankz u

old????

What is old man? You are going to learn a craft that takes years to master. Republic poly has a course on music production. Go for that. SAE is not exactly govt based that is true. You mentioned overseas, I suppose money is not a problem with u so why not just go overeas now then? I know a good friend who went to LA in the 2nd year of NJC to do his double degree straight. And he came back to do his National Slavery. Now he is in demand by commercial agencies like Ogilvy and Mathers.

We aint old until we think we old man. As of now, I think u are old already if u feel like that.

Cheers

I understand your position. Are you doing JC or pre-u? Since you have done 2yrs, why not just suck it all up and do what we call a total mugging stint, pia all the way. You have to mentally prepare youself, and really give up whatever bad habits, just for one whole year.

Whatever school you are in, go and look for the teacher with the best influence on you, have a good talk about your situation. Get advise and support. Have a good talk with your parents too, see if they can help you by giving or loaning you money to get private tuitions with your weak subjects.

I never had such guidiance before, and I was pretty alone when I was in your position (finish 1st year - pre-u, retain). I made my choice to jump to poly, which was no better in terms of study enviornment (did 4yrs for 3yrs course). It pretty affected my personal outlook, but I slug it out during poly, and by hook or crook, scrap a passing grade in the end. Almost got kicked by one of the retaining course.

Don't take it too badly in any case, you are still very young, think clearly on your path to take. Low education does not mean cannot make it. I haven't got a chance to use that diploma paper of my yet, I am still slugging it out every single day on my own 2 feet, for the past 10+yrs already, don't need the paper. But good to have something to fall back on.

hey mikeman...i understand ur situation too..pretty much same for me right nw...i am in pre-u..need to re-do my yr2 next yr as i didnt get promoted..now my plan is to go SAE etc..then go oversea..then hope to get stable job there etc...then over the years come back to singapore with watever money i earn and start a business or something...

well darren...if its poly for me rite..i only have one course in mind...FILM SOUND N VIDEO in ngee ann...
i have people telling me to stay but my heart doesnt feel like it...i have people telling me go poly but i worry abt the whole 3 yrs etc...n my last alternatives is the SAE route..n i am quite confident of SAE course of its reputation internationally etc...

hmm for now i am goin to stay on in my current school first..MI(bartley) n re-do my yr2 while i wait for the poly n sae admission date etc...then i apply n see if i get in which ever course...then i will decide again to leave or not...depending how i am coping next year...
i do not wanna waste my time there n end up getting a bad A level cert in the end n then need to still do some private diploma and end up in some oversea university..i got to see how its gonna be like for me man...

thankz to u guyz anyway for ur experience etc...give me more if u got more to tell..hehe..

Just one more thing. During my time, internet was still not yet known to common folks, computer was considered a luxury item then. Whenever we need 'free' information, we have to travel, to talk to people and to the library, where good books are always already 'on-loan'. Photocopying was our best resource for cheap material.

Now, you got google, forums, msn messenger, and of course WWW. Your generation already have a BIG edge over students 15yrs ago.

i get wat u mean man....i think i roughly know what u are trying to tell me...thankz man...i'll will not rush into making hasty decision juz yet...
