replacing ic/opamp chips...

got lots of free time lately, so i'm trying to learn some knowledge on pedal circuits and stuff..recently i open up my pedal and explore the "internal organs"...its a tube driven pedal bought overseas. had see that the chip inside is a tcl072, will changing the chip to some other chips change the sound?? cos currently the pedal sounds harsh and trebly. with little bass response. "driven sounds breaks" up too fast. i do understand that chips play a part in distortion tones?? wrong??

If so, what type of chips will you guys recommend? and any other steps i need to take other than just un-solder and replacing the ori. chip?

thanks!

What tube is it??? Get some info about tube on the net. Thats what i did with my tubeking tk999 tube. i replace the tube with tungsol tube and couldn't be more happy.

The change is pretty subtle. changing the Diodes and resistor and adding a LED or two here or there will change the sound drastically.
Depends on how may pin your IC is.. but chances are.. u cant go wrong with JRC4558D

im not so sure about changing the diodes and resistors, cant figure out which is which lol....
so i just tot of changing the chip 1st..the jrc 455d, its used in ts pedals rite?? im looking more for a distortion sound rather a overdrive sound...btw, any shops to recommend in sim lim where i can get th chips??

You have requested info without first stating the pedal you want to mod!??

Changing the chip (op-amp) will not transform your overdrive into a distotion pedal.
Maybe placing the diodes in certain position may lead you that way....

I guess you need more time understanding rather than goin on a wild goose chase ....

i hope this helps....

okies my bad, pedal im going to mod, "jen plantinum drive pedal", its using a 12ax7 tube in it... ya, i sure need a lot more time of understanding on this thingys...thanks! :)

dudelove: like i mention in my 1st post, im experimenting/learning the bits here and there, hence not buying another distortion pedal. got too many on hand...lol.

Any mod to this kinda pedal is extensive just to see a little improvement.
This is what we call "starved tube" OD pedal where the tube just sits in the signal line and does nothing much due to it's low current operation.

Well go ahead changing the "chip" if that is what you fancy ...hopefully it's mounted on IC foot for easy removal ?!!

Btw TL072 is a dual opamp ....already one of the best for this kinda circuit with a FET input stage.

Nice subtitues ....
OPA2134
NE5532
LF353
JRC4559

Have fun... ;)

So what does the tube do? Just make the pedal sound warmer? Is that a bit of a waste of tube?

goose ur really a pedalicious !!
i like the dist sound of LED instead of any diodes :D
chrunchy...

Yup ...LED's as clippers does get rid of the mush giving added push and crunch.
Above all it makes pedal more pick sensitive too....

Ized ...the OPA series are made by Burr Brown and they cost more thus not found on production pedals.
