Refret - advice please

Anyone knows who does a decent refretting job in Singapore. Rough cost estimates will be much appreciated.

Will the bindings on a gibson neck/fret make a difference to costs?

yea normally bound necks are harder to refret as the frets will be harder to dress and have to be cut individually to fit the binding.

as for the topic, I can't address it as I'm biased but this the start of a golden era for guitar repairs in Singapore. There are many out there who can do the job well. Refrets usually cost 200 and up.

If you want it done right, get Malcolm or KC to do it. I wouldn't risk such a big job with anyone else.

Binding makes it a little harder, thus more expensive. Expect to pay around $300ish for the job... possibly more.

Out of curiosity, why are you considering a refret in the first place? Did some guitar shop tell you to do that?

I've been told it needs refretting but i may bring it to either malcolm or KC for a second opinion before going ahead to do it. To be fair they are old guitars - one is 27 years old and the other is 14 years old.

I'm still curious as to whether the "advice" came from a guitar shop.

If your frets are still in decent condition, all you may really need is to have them leveled and crowned again. It still isn't cheap, but it's cheaper than a whole refret job, and is potentially less damaging to your guitar.

Hey Thonglor. I wasn't questioning you about whether you imagined you needed a refret or not - it was more to find out which guitarshop recommended a refret 'cos I know of a certain one or two who will recommend the most ridiculous things for really simple jobs... like a whole trussrod replacement for "broken trussrods" (which incidentally weren't broken at all...) or complete a complete refret because of one high fret.

Cherns - yeah you're absolutely right. I'm not exactly the most savvy person when it comes to guitars and i've been told things like "you might as well buy a new guitar" and other things that checkout otherwise when i do my research on the internet or through friends.

No worries bro, I'm glad you managed to get your second opinion here. Many don't. It just pains me everytime I hear of ppl suckered by those shops.
