Recommendation of luthiers.

Well, suit yourself. 8) I wonder what does it take to become a luthier then.

I'm with you on the musician thing, but not the luthier thing. I have respect for people who know their stuff.

Chill. Bro.

luthiering is an art. usually the product will speak for itself. Leo Fender was just a radio repair man...

don't need qualification one lah. :)

doctor different. it's life and death. guitar... you can say you can get electricuted, but... so ceritifcation is just not really that necessary.

No.. no need for qualification. Just want to have a distinction between a tech and a luthier. a luthier and a hobbyist/beginner/what you call them. I regard a luthier as a master builder who has build a good number of quality works (100 or so), not someone who carves out a couple of bodies or can setup a guitar. Luthiers don't come by like that. Its lots of training or experience or both.

Anyway, bopakeh only quoted half of what I said.

Lets go by the dictionary again:

luthier

n : a craftsman who makes stringed instruments (as lutes or guitars or violins)

There we go. So there are just good or bad luthiers, there really isn't any government approved luthiery cert. Hence no distinction between 'qualified' or 'unqualified' luthiers.

luthier..again...brings controversy.

you can be a hobbyist, who's built like say 100 guitars...why not?

you can go to school, and learn to do anything, but if you don't use it anymore, what's the use?

what's the difference between a guitar tech, and a luthier? one repairs, and one builds.

only ONE luthier? u sure?

a luthier who repairs? he's still a guitar technician.

and some technicians ARE trained to be luthiers, some techs are NOT trained, but are competent enough.

boutique pedal builders too...some do it out of hobby, and then decide to mass build and sell them.

the more qualified ones should be BOSS/EHX etc....shouldn't they?

they did the research, and whatevershitnots.

but why do ppl crave for the boutique stuff?

luthier or tech?

i'd rather send to one who i feel comfortable with.

after all, it IS our wives/girlfriends we send to...

Because booteeks usually provide for the niche people... the big names will be doing it for the economics of cash flow / demand & supply and the general public. Booteekers also usually improve on the design...

Big names do a good job.

Booteek can do a better job.

Vice versa too, since its your ears anyway.

There's something about stuff being done by hand, no? :P Mojo or soemthing lah.

If its just minor set-up or repairs to any extent on a guitar - any person with skillz and guts to tinker can achieve ...given time they can be pretty impressive...

BUT if its building guitars from planks of choice wood - needs trainning ...usually these people are called a luthier. There are known master luthiers who (with some divine appoinment) started out tinkering!!!

Its only here you need papers for (almost) everything.... 8O

You will know by the fruits .....
