Randolf mods

erm......
how do i tell whats analog and whats digital? so are boss pedals analog?

Ah, now that's a good question! All drive pedals from Boss are analog but we're about to see Boss introducing COSM technology within their new range of drive pedals so I guess we'll start to see more digital drive pedals that incorporate modelling technology.

Somehow I still believe that the old analog drive pedals will remain as they are for a long time. :)

Is the COSM digital technology in their drive pedals a good thing or bad thing?

Will BOSS lose its market/respect among 'vintage all-analog' gear freaks (which would be majority of the crowd here)?

Not necesarily a good or bad but rather more of interesting addition to the already wide variety of drive pedals. COSM technlogy as a whole was already implemented in Roland's VG8, VG88 and now of late the VG99 flagship all in one guitar, amp and effects modelling powerhouse system. Obviously not everyone is gonna be able to afford a flagship product. So it does make business sense to offere this great technology to the masse in smaller and more affordable packages.

So in a way just like Line6 has the same modelling technology offered from amp heads to kidney shaped table top devces to multi efx floorboard and also the individual stomps.

Analog still rules but digital will still have its place side by side with analog stomps on the same stage for a long time coming. :)

but bro randy, is it a myth then that if u nd to have a mix of digital and analog peds, u should use analog drive/distortion peds and digital modulation ones? I've read b4 that for modulation efx, digital pedals work great, and mix well with analog drive pedals. True?

*Mythbusters returns after these commercials*

Ken, it's not a myth but a long time proven way of combining analog drive pedals with digital modulation effects. However, it's not the only way as there's always the use of analog modulation devices like old tape based analog delays.

thanks!

like the Maestro Echoplex eh...beautiful sounds.

I love the sound of a true leslie as well...the little lanilei tube amp+rotary cab set sounds really good for the size btw!

Leslies are nice too ya. Originally used by B3 organ players. It's almost like a combination of flanging with phasing but there's also the unique aural doppler effect going on. Combined with raising and lowering the speed the Leslie sound is quite a head spinner. In S'pore there was an old rental studio called Groove Maker who used to own an actual Leslie system which was used when Deep Purple first played in Singapore with Ritchie Blackmore (some more!) in ether late 80's or 90...I think :)

For those interested about these analog Boss Drive pedals. Here's my take on the MT2, MD2 and BD2;

MT2 Metalzone usually a joke among most pedal users of recent times actually imho has the most powerful built in parametric all imporatant midrange Eq control together with a high and low control compared to almost any other drive pedal out there now. The trick to experiencing the major capabilities of the MT2 is to mod it by removing the stock nasal quality and assign this pedal either as a soloist, distortion or with mods turn it into a secret overdrive pedal of a weapon.

MD2 Mega Distortion was quite a recent discovery for me and man did this pedal raise my eyebrows! The MD2 has a unique design of 2 individual drive control knobs which is most unique among pedal stomps out there now. The 2 seperate drive knobs allows you to dial it to replicate the tube amp characteristics of tweaking the fine balance between pre amp and power amp distortion. If you want shred simply dial in more preamp distortion from the 1st dist knob and if u want ACDC type classic grunt simply dial in for less preamp dist but more power section distortion. If you find the stock sound compressed that can be easily resolved with a wide range of customized mods.

BD2 Bluesdriver is the only non fuzz pedal that has that fulltube amp like dynamic drive control of simply rolling down your guitar's volume knob to get a cleaner drive without your tone degrading to a rubbery mush. Unlike most Fuzz pedals the BD2 does not have that messy low end which can be enhanced, lessened or tightened depending on each players needs.

I think that digital and analog technology will coexist with amps, efx and eventually guitars. Just like the way acoustic and electrics coexist today.

Why not we make a sticky thread for Randolf? Then he can answer all our queries one a while that we wana ask but dont know who to ask. that be great :D

Thanks for the idea but pls do guide me along when that happens as I'm quite a retard on web based stuff ya. :)
