Qns on pro guitarists' gear list

And guys, get it STRAIGHT. TONE, friggin TONE, comes in 2 parts.

Your articulation and your sound.

Hear hear! Too many ppl give the bullshit that good tone in the fingers is all emcompassing because if someone plays other type of crap guitar he still sounds like himself. And with good tone in the fingers he will sound good playing anything.

Following that argument, Michael Jackson underwent so many times of plastic surgery but still looks like himself what. Nose bridge eyes face complexion etc. Which means that since he originally looked decent then he will look decent now cause he still looks like himself what. But everyone knows he looks guai lan now.

almondx, there isnt a need here for you to turn this thread into an anti MJ thread.. think before you talk can? thanks.

they got racks and shit...and urmm guitar techs...they can just choose not to use any pedal..and let a guitar tech stand at the side of the amp and set an amp effect each time...

as for boutique,it's just for boastage...not entirely, but 78% of buying boutique is due to "1337ism"

Its all in the world class recording studios. Pro artists in the UK/USA have used equipment 30 years ago that we dont even have here in singapore now. Look at James hetfields phase cancelling techniques and distortion techniques. Look U2 guitarists natural live delay methods (mic and speaker setups). Its all $$$ and experience.

guitar rig database of bands....

btw, not all bands used lots of gears. check out the donnas guitarist, she's a meat and potatoes type of guitarist. for live, she uses a gibson straight into a marshall jcm 2000 dsl/tsl.. and it sounded good.

some pro guitarists have massive effect set ups e.g Steve Lukather, Riki Hendrix, Snuffleuppergass...etc

Somedont e.g. Angus Young.

I have used my ME30 for the last 7 years - suits me fine..

2 each their own

After all when we play guitar, our main target audience is the crowd, mostly just made of music lovers. I bet they can't tell much of the subtle differences that come from the various stuff we dicuss here e.g. boutique vs common pedals ect. Sometimes my friends tell me that they hear not much of a difference after hearing me with new gear, and mind you not all of them are complete music/guitar idiots. Thats why I think (apart from all the other reasons stated which I concur to the max) that those pros, have such minimal rigs because in the end they are playing to 50000 people whom mostly know nuts about stuff. They only care about the fast riffs and the cool licks man haha.

Sometimes I really do feel that the only person that we are trying to please is the guitarist ourselves, cos maybe only we can firgure out whats going on and only we can appreciate it.

basket fgl, who say i pro? 8O HAHAAHA spell name wrongly lah dey

I second shredcow's statement lah, Tone is Articulation plus your actual sound. Please don't simplify it.(articulation is the unique signature stylings adopted by the individual)

Some like it massive , some don't

Some enjoy the stress of tap-dancing and worrying if the patch cables would work flawlessly onstage, and some would rather avoid that.

and whether the musician decides to use fanciful gear as compared to using cheaper gear is purely based on the individual's choice.

You can look at it as wearing branded clothes , its their choice, it doesn't mean anything actually, maybe except that one can afford more than the other, or that one has a set of values that is different from another(quality,longer-lasting,etc,etc)-hence they don't mind paying more.

If I buy a Porche it doesn't mean that I'm a better driver than you. :D

woohoo my bad, i thought how dare u put the name snuffleupagrasss together with the magnificent lukather, tad bit embarrassing

I sorta concur with the idea that we guitarists tend to over-nitpick on tone. At the end of the day, unless you're a closet guitarist whose work does not go out to the general masses, it's the masses' opinions that matter.

I don't think you need a musician to tell you that a particular tone sounds good, or that one sound is better than the other. Any listener of decent music should be considered a suitable judge of tone, since he/she is part of the crowd we eventually wish the music to reach out to. Of course, if I were trying to get a nice metal tone, I'd ask someone who listens to metal, and not a jazz enthusiast.

Good tone(part of which comes from gear) makes you want to practise more, more practice increases your dexterity, which in turn helps you play and sound better.

For pros, music is their life, while for most of us, music is but a hobby/passion that cannot afford to demand the bulk of our time. They have worked hard to attain their dexterity and thus the so-called ordinary pedals are sufficient to make them sound v good, while hobbyists like myself either require a significantly longer time, or a whole lotta talent to sound as good with the same bunch of pedals. So how? bo pian, spend a bit more now in the hope of getting good tone with less skill, but continue to work on dexterity.

they all have a spudtone hidden somewhere...that thing cost millions..they just don't wanna talk about it...if I'm not wrong,Eric Johnson semi-modded his Spudtone..if he fully modded,it could kill. I'm not lying.

it's like discussing about Illuminati at 4tones Jamming Studio

"if he fully modded it, it could kill..."

haha, good one Aenimic...

reminds me of the malmsteen spoof on youtube..
