Punk Rock Discussion Thread

Since this is a "punk rock discussion" thread :)

It'll be great if "punks" be less militant about the music and genres they listen to. Punk was never about putting others down. I remember listening to Green Day and Nirvana back in '94 and these 2 bands were the "bridge" to punk music which in turn introduced me to the world of hardcore/socio political music.

I believe many of us here didn't start out listening to Discharge or Conflict all of a sudden. I know of kids who started listening to NoFX after reading that they're one of Good Charlotte's influences on LIME Mag. I'm sure they'll go on to discover more "real" (if that's what you wanna call it) punk bands after NoFX. GC isn't that bad a band now eh?

I'm not promoting the "fake punk" bands here but punk isn't about how fast your drummer play his 16 beat or how "skateworthy" your skate punk band is. My band Kate of Kale started out playing Ramonesy songs when we first started 7 yrs ago. Skaters and street punks were open to us. When we started playing a lot faster, the hardcore kids put us on their shows with hardcore bands. There wasn't any discrimination of any sort. (There weren't any sing/scream bands then altho it's all the rage now).

Till now, we still play indie, punk and hardcore shows. However, it's sad that due to all the genre classification, kids who go to shows are more bothered about which genre is accepted and which is not. All the arms folding, all the "emo bashing" and all the militant metal core dudes, kids who are willing to spend $39 on a "punk" shirt from Far East but no money to buy a local release. That's NOT punk.

Punk isn't being all narrow minded so listen to all music with an open mind. It was punk that got me into hardcore, metal, folk and more. It also got me to be more socially and politically aware.

Instead of spending time classifying which sub genre a particular band falls into, go out, buy more music, books, support local artistes and podcasts!

great post! i agree with everthing you said. just want to expand on your point up there, for the others that don't think NOFX is "real" punk. sorry i just have to speak up. NOFX were punking it up when most of you were still in diapers. yes they may have single-handedly been responsible for creating the entire "false punk" mainstream movement we see now. but although they may have inspired that whole genre of bands, they have never fallen into that genre themselves. their influences were the same "real" punk bands that the elitist punk rockers are so defensive over. NOFX have been around doing their thing for close to 30 years now. i've been listening to them since the days of White Trash and Punk in Drublic. even then they'd been around for 12 years already. this is a band who have survived in the underground with NO radio airplay and NO mtv for 3 decades. they even called up mtv and screwed them over the phone for playing a video of them and told them never to do it again. they don't do it for the money. they don't do it for the fame. they just do it coz they wanna do it and that is "real" punk.

it's not about what you wear, or how high you spike your hair, or what bands you listen to. the spirit of punk has always been to do what YOU want to do and not what everyone else is doing. and guess what, it's not exclusive to punk rock. metal is all about the same thing. i laugh at the kiddies on review sites arguing that DRI and GBH are punk not metal bands. Green Day and Offspring sold out. who the hell cares? it's all music and we're all outcasts so why the feck we fighting with ourselves? bad enough we got to fight the man.

if you don't like a style of music, just leave it. i don't really like the emos, screamos and goths calling themselves rock or metal either but what am i going to do? bashing them and screaming about it isn't gonna solve anything. just let them get on with it. in a few years time they'll all be gone and the next fad will be in.

ASH is cool. been listening to them since 1996.
the reason i like them is dat their music is different. i dunno how to describe their music. if u listen to all their albums then u'll know.
