Punk Rock Discussion Thread

i still dont think greenday or the offspring are punk man. doesnt sound the same as what i heard, what i thought was punk rock. but i thought punk always had different sounds, nofx, the casualties, ramones, rancid. they all sound different. but they are still labelled punkrock. i dont know what all the hubba is about, but i think what punk rock, what i think it is

who says they are punk?

they have different sounds because they play a different sub genre of punk. anyway no band is the same. all have their unique styles

Lyrically, Green Day look more Punk than their older albums...sound wise, it's comparable to tons of punk bands out there but it's debatable since their on the airwaves now...

If most people look at it that way, then Green Day would definitely fit the bill...of course, the charity thing with Music Rising won't help much with their punk credibility...maybe take a look at their past...

Like a guy said before, Green Day would draw in all those young, and impressionable minds. Then... direct them to REAL punk bands like say.. Dead Kennedies, Sex Pistols, The Clash?

Music is an universal language, LOVE, BROTHERS!

but then some punk pop bands are losing the element of punk in their music.

definition from dictionary.com :a type of rock-'n'-roll, reaching its peak in the late 1970s and characterized by loud, insistent music and abusive or violent protest lyrics, and whose performers and followers are distinguished by extremes of dress and socially defiant behavior.

some bands got no angst. not goin to quote any to avoid flaming...

in my own personal opinion, i tink green day were quite punk during their younger days.. there's a time where billie (the vox) got in a fight with one of his fans.. they used f*ck eveyone up laz time.. but now, they seems to be goin to corporate direction.. and most of their songs were pop-punk kinda thing..

but in my own personal opinion, punk rock were known for their simple musical structures and honest confrontations of social and political lyrics.

and one thing, I just don't like modern punk. :-)

First time happened, his Strat's horn broke...2nd time, he flew off the stage! Haha...great stuff...but I guess they know they're a little old now to get into fights...matured I guess...but hey, they still do f*** GWB...

yea man.. everyone will get matured eventually.. juz face the fact.. hahah.. but getting into fight is not a form of immature from my point of view.. hhaha..

anyways........does anyone listen to crossover thrash and the new kinds of punk that are coming out like fastcore and thrashcore and hardcore. preety cool. checkout second opinion and discarga. tr00 underground thrashin punk mayhem.

also, the only way to be a real punk is to attack and rebel against punk itself. HA HA!

listen to the Dead Kennedys song "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" and you'll see that punk shouldn't be about following a set of rules and ethics of the punk style but to go against the same foundation of etiquette your movement was based upon. hail biafra!

yeah all those "new kinds of punk" are great man.

It's amusing to see that an entire group of people could possibly be so militant about conforming to nonconformity.

I think the question shouldn't be what's "punk" and what's not. It should be "what sounds good to me?" and that's it.

So what if Green Day is punk/not punk enough? Is the resolution to that gonna blow a humongonormous hole in the Ozone layer and roast us alive in a bath of ultraviolet rays?
