First, spend on your instruments...
Here's how the sound chain works
Instrument (Source) -> Mic -> Preamp -> Audio Interface AD/DA -> Computer -> Speakers
(Excluding room!)
From left to right, that which affects sound quality most is from left, thus the instrument will place the most part of affecting the sound, followed by mic etc....
