Poseur/Poser

Hmm.

I guess that the placing of one's image would be of a high priority to those who wish to be part of a music genre or a 'movement'. And for those who believe in applying a 'purist' attitude, I feel that such extremism can be avoided.

After all, one's style is one's own. Why bother?

I honestly listen to a live band for the music. No doubt a visual presence would help in performer-audience ESP, but when the dressing detracts an audience away from the music, then the whole thing is honestly full of bullsh*t and it would not warrant my attention for more than 5 minutes.

The only band that I enjoy which uses a visual gimmick is AC/DC (huge blown-up props and cannons and the infamous school-boy outfit on Angus Young). But I'll dare anyone to say that AC/DC places more emphasis on visual rather than aural entertainment.

Take a look at Cradle of Filth , KISS and X Japan. There are seriously good in their own respective music. I admire Cradle of Filth for their gothic keyboard arrangements during the beginning of their songs , KISS for that groovy rock n roll style of playing and X Japan for their orchestral arrangements. But at least they put their music as first pirority before incorporating their own unique image identity.

I rather we as musicians work hard and put our musicianship as top pirority first before thinking about image. If your band is good , you can overdress , crossdress , paint your each other faces , wear wigs , wearing lipstick , dress up like Lordi for all I care because what matters most in being in a band is the music and not putting up a fashion parade.

just keep the music good. with good music comes people who are willing to accept the way you dress... and yeah.. the word poser ticks me off.

being a poseur brings big bucks... being a poser just makes you end up playing para para with a buncha pai kias.

no so bad for k fed. While he a poseur, he did get to bed britney before, while the rest of the world, majority, get to see thru picture, the area that kfed roamed around when bedding her, when she get off the car that paris drove

1. Music comes first before dressing.

2. Your style, your rules. If you DARE to dress up differently from your genre, then DARE to except the fact that there will be some people calling you a poser. So before you start wearing something that don't fit in the genre in other people's eye, be prepared to take their critics and dont fuss over it.

3. If you really have to comment on something, keep it to yourself or your friends. Don't go and tell the performer(s) straight at the face, its hurtful. Unless they ask you for opinions.

Humans can't keep their mouth shut, i'm very sure all of you agree with this (neither can i keep my mouth shut). We always have something to. So move on with it, its part of life. Ignore all this critics and life will be better for you.

Peace.
Happy rocking! \m/

WOW u explain all man..........OK JAMES LOCK THIS THREAD!!!!!!!! B4 there's more commotion. I think nxa giv it all liao

isnt a poseur just someone who doesnt truly like the music he/she listens to but listens to it just to fit in?

next time you need to know, check the dictionary. what other people think of you doesnt matter. half the people here dont know you(thread starter) anyway.

James: hey retro IS still fashion man! haha

DB: yes u have a point about the punk vs metal thingy which started all these verbal abuse terms... and the guy who dresses up like a metal head and playing classical music... no one would call him a poser

but i think, that poser would refer to someone who tries very hard to fit into a culture (especially metal and punk) by acting/dressing up and doing what nots without actually understanding the culture... e.g. i dress punk just to "fit-in" and "go-with-the-flow" or "follow the trend" instead of truely understanding the core values and what punk is about. so the term "poser" came about from the "true" (dunno who dictates who's treu in the 1st place) punks to label those "wannabies" (something similiar in meaning).

i'm guessing that such a term got involved with music partially because it originated from a culture involved with a certain genre of music.

maybe people tend to simplify things to this today: if i can play a certain genre of music well, but i don't dress up/ or have a behavior associated with the genre, i'm not a poser

but if i dress/behave like i belong to a culture associated with a genre of music, but can't play stuff from that genre, i'm a poser...

its not limited to music though... take for example skaters. u dress like a skater and carry a skate board around, but u can't skate for nuts and have no intention to. people would call u a poser because u try to be like them but u're not. something along this line.

u dress up like a rocker and carry a gutiar around but u can't play guitar for nuts and don't intend to learn, maybe u would be called a poser. act like one but not one.

its a largely mis-used word and can be quite rude if u tell some1 in the face that he/she's a poser

so tip no 1:don't call sum1 a poser even if u think he's one
tip no 2: don't be too affected if someone calls u one, just train and practise harder and actions speak louder than words

I don't look anything like the music i listen to ........

1. my project coordinator at school told me i look like a MetalHead
2. my classmates thought i look grunge or something
3. my neighbour literally asked me "eh, what are you?"

just human man!!!!!!

think the word's "Trend" or sometimes "Trendy Wanker" nowadays......havent heard poser for awhile.

if someone's still got the poser question in mind, the best way to get everything explained, in my opinion, would be to watch Salt Lake City Punks (SLC Punks).

we should all just get along, make music, drink lotsa alcohol (*ahem* if u r 18++) and rock out together.....

People who call others poser are the insecure and lifeless ones, because they feel the need to condescend and put other people down so that it'll make them feel more "worthy" to the culture/music they belong to.

Taylorboy87: There you go. I wouldn't call them lifeless though..they probably just don't have a sense of belonging.

i agree with mightymouse, the word to use is trendy wanker

if u really disagree with the person, trendy wanker is a better word cause poseur is very vague
